Rapid Charging

I knew that the p3 xl wouldn't rapid charge wirelessly unless it was on a Pixel stand, but I didn't realize it also wouldn't rapidly charge unless you used their wall charger. Is that right, or is it my cheap cables?

No, I'm pretty sure that you have to use the pixel exclusive cable and brick in order for to fast charge.

Was the Pixel 2 the same? I had the 2XL and thought it would rapid charge with any charger. That is lame.

Unfortunately, I can't speak for the 2XL. I've only had my 3XL. although if the 2XL was anything like the 3XL, I would have to say yes. say my dad used to tell my old Verizon customers in stores, they would want to use cheap chargers And I would have to strongly urged them not to because of the reason that it might not give their phones a full charge, or it might mess up their battery.

Even the 2xl wouldn't rapidly charge with any charger. It would charge rapidly when using PD charger and compatible cable. Same with the Pixel 3. I've been rapidly charging with the PD charger and cable from the Essential phone.

Sheesh, I have no idea what my official Pixel 3 charger and/or cable look like!!! They probably joined a pile of cables and chargers. Do they have Google logos on either item?

Nope. Both are just white with no logo.

Pixels 3 needs USB -C PD for fast charging. USB-C PD is a standard protocol. The Pixel 3 charger is a 18w USB-C port and the charge cable is a regular standard USB-C to USB-C cable. You can also buy any of the USB-C PD chargers out there and they will do fast charge. As for wireless charging, you need Pixel Stand. Others are generally not compatible with Pixels 3 fast charge.

I have the Pixel stand. There is no rapid charge using it. If I want rapid charge, I unplug the stand and plug it into the phone. I spent about two hours with support chat. I think they removed rapid charge with the last update

It is probably just a mistake in the display. The actual charge rate probably remains the same. But it is only a 10w wireless charger vs 18w when you plugged in.

When I have time I can test it against the standard 5w wireless charger to see if it is twice as faster.

Just wanted to clear this up: as someone said below, you can rapid charge the pixel3 with non-google cables and chargers. I use both Aukey and Anker bricks and cables without any problem. If it's PD and 18w, you will get the same results as the Pixel stock brick/cable.

What you can't do is rapid charge wirelessly without the pixel stand (although I thought Belkin did release a rapid charger that was pixel certified).

Quoting myself - found an unboxing Pixel 3 video and captured and image of a rather generic adapter although rather than the standard USB-A connector on the charger is has a USB-C connector.

There are a few 3rd party 10w wireless chargers claimed to be Google certified and compatible with Pixel 3 on Amazon but if you read the reviews, they all share the same overheating and reliability problems.

Pixel 2 didn’t have wireless charging.

But you could fast charge with any USB PD compatible charger (minimum to get the wired rapid charging message is 15W).

USB-C PD is now a preferred (fast) charging standard moving forward. Even iPhones now support USB-C PD for fast charging (still require certified USB-C to lightning cable). In addition, new tablets and laptops now support USB-C PD for charging as well (higher wattage required). So, ditching all those old USB-A chargers. Stock up on USB-C PD chargers. It is good that we finally have a common charging standard that everyone agrees on.

One thing to note is that USB-C PD has a number of different charging protocols. Just because a charge is USB-C PD doesn't necessarily mean it will offer the fastest charging for your device, even if the charger is capable of outputting higher wattage, as it doesn't have so support every protocol within its range.

Pixels fast charge via the 18w protocol, which is 9v2A. If a charger doesn't specifically include variant, it will disappoint. This is less likely an issue with more recent 3rd party chargers, but was a pretty common annoyance early on, at least.
