Razr and Rezound get ICS probably next week, no mention of Bionic

Re: Razr and Rezound get ICS probably next week, no mention of Bi

Here's an idea for you. Root your Bionic, install Safestrap and one of the ICS ROMS. Now you can have ICS to play with and still easily fall back to GB if needed.

Re: Razr and Rezound get ICS probably next week, no mention of Bi

I am actually getting close to trying this myself. I am tottally rooted and rom'd on my Xoom, but I have problem deciding to do this on my phone for some reason. I'm getting close though. With no really solid ICS builds out there that I've found I'm not overly excited to get this done. Also, simply because our "back door devs" haven't gotten it solved on the phone yet, makes me think that the actual devs haven't either since we seem to have fake versions so much more quickly than we get the official stuff.

But isn't the os for the razr very similar to the bionic? I know there are differences, but if they are similar wouldn't that mean that we should see ics sooner rather than later?

Nope not at all. Unless you have identical hardware, you cannot simply port over a stable release.

There are several solid ICS builds, if by "solid" you mean stable and with most functions working properly. About the only thing you'd do without would be video and BT. My daily driver has to have BT, which is why Safestrap is so handy.

I'm guessing that the main problem in getting a fully functional ICS build for the Bionic has to do with two things. First the locked bootloader forces "backdoor devs" to use the old kernel, and second the lack of drivers for some of the Bionic's hardware. And I doubt the "actual devs" are having a problem with it, I just doubt they're even working on it, or if they are it's not a priority.

Moto could unlock the bootloader at any time if VZ would permit it. And writing drivers isn't a big deal when the hardware manufacturer works with you, and if VZ called they'd damn sure answer.

I also think we're going to find that an AOSP ICS runs fine on lower end hardware, e.g. the DX, assuming someone is willing to do it and has the resources...and an unlocked bootloader.

Do those ROMs have Webtop 3.0?

Leak details ICS update and testing phases for several Verizon devices
So it seems that the Razr and Rezound should be getting their updates to ICS soon, but for the time being, we're getting a bugfix. This doesn't mean we won't get it, but we probably won't get it until Summer, which is much further out than anticipated.

They probably need some time to get the Bionic up to speed.

I'll only be upset if they cancel it.

This will probably upset some of you -

(don't mind the headline)

Google: We're fine with keeping you waiting for slow Android updates

Android smartphones are not typically updated very frequently, leaving many owners to either try and update their own device, or wait for months or even years to get the latest operating system. The technical lead developer on the Android Open Source Project believes the slow update rate many Android users have had to endure is ?very reasonable.? Sometimes, Jean-Baptiste Queru revealed his opinion on his Google+ page in a congratulatory post towards Sony, who recently updated its Tablet S to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The developer said the Japanese company was the biggest contributor to Android, leaving all other manufacturers playing catch-up. Due to its contributions, Sony is able to ensure timely updates for its own devices, while helping the community as a whole. Queru said the complexity of moving from Android 3.0 to Android 4.0 is the reason it took Sony five-months to updates its tablet.

?This is actually a very reasonable time, since under the hood Ice Cream Sandwich is quite different from Honeycomb (and upgrades from Gingerbread are likely to take longer as those differences are huge),? he said.

They said it's getting it, that means we're getting it. Just when.

Probably by aug/sept.
I'm thinking July/August. September at the latest, but that's a full year after the phone was released.

I'm running a 4/23 nightly of the CM9 build. Runs smooth but I would like to have video, panorama, and hardware acceleration. But in general, it works well for me.

Re: Razr and Rezound get ICS probably next week, no mention of Bi

I used the ICS Rom and it was cool, but was way to buggy. The 3g connection SUCKED so bad. I reverted back to GB and all is well. Ill wait for the official release.

Re: Razr and Rezound get ICS probably next week, no mention of Bi

Seems like I remember when the announcement was made on the Moto site, it was going to be Q4 this year at the earliest before ICS for us. And if we don't get it, then we don't get it.

You are thinking incorrectly. And apparently reading the leaked release schedule incorrectly as well. It says that the "test dates" for the RAZR ICS build are between 4/19 and 5/17 - meaning it won't even be fully tested until the middle of May. It is NOT releasing during this period.

You will also notice, if you look closely, that the RAZR is currently receiving a bugfix OTA just like we soon will be. The purpose of this is to prepare the device for the ICS OTA, according to Droid-Life's post about said OTA.

I suspect the upcoming bugfix for the Bionic may serve the same purpose. Given the timeline, i'd say we might be in line to receive ICS a couple of weeks after the RAZR at most, assuming there are no showstopper issues with the RAZR OTA.

I am not surprised that the devices are not receiving the update simultaneously, as VZW/Moto seldom push more than one major OTA at a time. The size of the ICS update will be quite a hit on Moto's servers.

By the way, here is the FULL leaked timeline, not just the first page:

Verizon Update Schedule Out; HTC, Motorola Updates Incoming - Other News - droid HIVE - Articles - droidHIVE

For all we know, the Bionic ICS update may show up on the "Week of May 1st" timeline.

I hate to burst your bubble, but there's a strong possibility that we won't get even that update until late May. And then they're still working on the ICS update after that, which I'm sure they'll take their sweet time with. You forget that they still have to update the Droid 4 before the Bionic too.

Wasn't there a G+ post from the ASOP gatekeeper basically saying 8 months to update is standard? I can wait.

No necessarily on the D4. It's certainly possible, perhaps probable, but, just as an example, the D2 and D2 Global, which both shipped after the Droid X, got GB well after the DX did.
