RAZR M loses service when plugged in to USB port on my computer

I accidentally left my regular charger at a friends house last weekend so I'm stuck using a crappy USB charger I got for Christmas. Needless to say it is not a Motorola charger and on top of taking nearly twice as long to charge my phone it also shuts off the cell service when plugged into the computer. Is this a setting I can change through the phone or the computer? Or is the charging cable at fault? Any suggestions to get me through the next week or so, until I get my regular charger back?
