RAZR Reviewed in Store

Same camera as the Bionic? Deal breaker. :( I love everything else about this phone, but for me, an excellent camera in a phone that is supposed to last me 2 years is a "must."

Everyone has different perspectives and ways of describing things. I'm waiting to see it for myself in the store.

Plus the screen isn't Pen Tile, it's Super AMOLED Advanced. Is that first picture really from the RAZR? It looks too blurry and unfocused. I call BS on all this. Sorry, but it's like you're trashing the phone on purpose and making up stuff.

Most of the gripes about the Bionic's camera are merely software related. It takes forever to focus, but if you've rooted and used the Cheesecake app to upgrade to newer firmware such as the 5.7.893 update, the camera lag is fixed. Or use an alternate app such as Camera Zoom FX to get better pictures. I think Motorola just has poor camera software, but the hardware is still good.

I believe the new screens that Motorola is using are still Pen Tile, just a different type of Pen Tile than on the Bionic. The RAZR is using a RGBG subpixel arrangement instead of the RGBW arrangement of the Bionic. There are some benefits to the Bionic's screen such as superior brightness though and I actually like the screen. People need to get off the term Pen Tile and just look at the screens for themselves. It's funny because the GS1 phones all had Pen Tile screens but nobody seemed to care then.

Last time I checked the screen on the rzar was not pentile or am I wrong... anyone? Also if u sent the pic via text they will be very compressed so this is no real indication of what the pics will look like

the screen on the razr is qHD, but not pentile...so you're correct

Going to Verizon now to check out the razr. Any requests?

Call the number on the 2nd pic. When someone at the store answers ask them what phone it is.

I love almost everything about the RAZR, but the camera is still a concern. I will bet you $50 paypal that the camera will be one of the biggest complaints.

My first impressions...
Just got back from seeing it myself and I'm pretty impressed. Was expecting to be disappointed with all the build up over the last month. It more than held its own. The Screen and Camera were my biggest concerns...

Screen- big, clear and beautiful. Personally I didn't see any pixelization- it's not on the level of Retina in it's detail- but it's easily a match for the Samsung screens. Though, keep in mind AMOLED screens have never been known for color accuracy and the RAZR was no different- though no more than any other AMOLEDs I've seen. But I was impressed enough this will not be the reason for me to wait for the Nexus.

Camera- Fast shutter- as close to zero lag as you can get. I was able to get some nice sharp shots that appeared fairly accurate in color. That said it'll be hard to really evaluate until we get it out of the store, take some shots, and blow it up on a computer.

Build, look and feel- WOW- this is a sweet piece of hardware guys. Both the thinness and how light the phone feels is almost other worldly- just not what your used to expecting in a phone. And none of the solid feel you hope for is sacrificed. Someone wrote the Kevlar felt silky and I couldn't understand that description until I felt it myself- but it was accurate.

Speed- Fast-- I tried 3 different units on display, and they all just flew. I really didn't see any lags- though admittedly I didn't try to open tons of apps.

HEAT- I will preface this by saying this is not a complaint. I used one of the units pretty hard for a good period of time- expecting to feel the back start to heat up - interesting- it was cool as the other side of the pillow. However- I then noticed the screen was getting fairly warm, not quite hot, but close. Is this a AMOLED thing?

-Screen debate- RAZR does HD with movies. Both are pen-tile. You lose that .3" advantage on the Nexus for 90%+ of it's use- that .3 is needed for the buttons. Nexus may have more pixels- but at this stage there is a diminishing return, nice, just not that much of a difference to make it a game changer.

-Build- it's really hard not to give the nod to the RAZR.

Conclusion- Been on the fence with the whole Nexus debate for the last 3-4 months. Now that I've seen it I just can't seem to walk away from the RAZR. There really isn't a downside.

Saw one in the store...

It was not activated yet so all I could do is see the bootup by resetting it holding down the power and volume keys and the phone keypad.

The colors were way more vibrant than the Bionic - however as some have said the white was washed out a bit comparatively.

It was VERY thin and light. It was not as comfortable to hold as the bionic because the edges were not rounded out - they were thin. However they handed me a fake unit which was the same size and weight and it was not bad to hold in fact I could flip it over and over in my hand.

The Kevlar on the back did NOT scratch - I tried my fingernails more than once and it was very resistant. The materials all looked top notch.

It's effectively the same size as the Bionic. The size difference is so small - it may seem bigger because it's not as rounded to hold.

I may go back tomorrow and test it when they have it up and running but at least I got to hold it and play with it.

Is it better than the Bionic - yes. Is it better than the Nexus - I don't know

I really wanted to like the display but I don't. Text is fine but it is the back ground where I see the screen door. It is not as bad as the Samsung captivate but it is still there for me. It is a personal preference and the razr screen would drive me crazy. Don't get me wrong it is a very nice phone and a lot of people are going to be very happy with the razr.

I was surprised to see the Razr on display today. I just wanted to walk in and talk about adding a line. I must say, I was hoping that this phone was going to be a strong contender against the GN. It was not.

To me, the screen door effect is extremely noticeable. Just as bad as the Bionic. I can't even read text on websites. I thought maybe it was a bad demo model, so I tried another one at the Droid Razr station they have set up to promote the phone, but same awful screen. Dreadful. (How people don't notice this is a joke. That, or they are 100% completely biased.)

I like the back of the device. The Kevlar felt really nice and smooth, but could scratch easy. Video was very nice (almost as good as the iPhone 4S I tested), picture quality was terrible.

Nowhere near as responsive as the GS II. ( I also checked out the Skyrocket at AT&T today - amazing phone, but no LTE yet where I live, so no-go.)

I actually laughed at loud while using it in the store. It really was that bad. Nobody else in the store even went near the device, and it was pretty packed in there today. Oh well. I guess this is why Verizon is so scared to release the Nexus anytime soon.

I didn't see this screen door effect, people are being silly/biased probably need to just need to bump up the brightness. Pentile is gone that needs to be settled now, stop spouting nonsense. I did notice the bionic had much higher brightness and stronger whites but thats just a pentile vs amoled thing, completely preference. If you prefer accurate colors lcd is the way to go, but personally i LOVE the colors brought out by thus screen, netflix looked amazing!

Please don't listen to this guy or at least go see it for yourself, I thought the screen was really nice, maybe not the best out there but it extremely big enough and clear enough that if you can't read the text on it you really need to see an eye doctor...as for responsiveness i thought it was instant never had to reswipe or click twice to get it to do what I wanted....only thing that took a second or two was opening the camera from the lock screen...I thought it took really nice pictures, maybe not as good as the iPhone but still high quality....it is extremely thin and the hump isn't as big or as noticeable as it looks in pictures, the Kevlar on the back is cool, sort of soft feeling build quality seems solid, yet very light weight...any other questions let me know or better yet hit up your Verizon store hope that helps....I still may go for the nexus so this review is certainly not bias

I wish there was a demo unit at my Verizon. I just want to do a key test to see how durable the Kevlar backing is. So many contradicting reports of it scratching/not scratching easily.

I really went at the Kevlar and it was literally a brand new unit - it wasn't even activated. I took my thumbnail and repeatedly tried to scratch it or even see any result at all. I could not harm it at all. My overall impression was the the Kevlar won't be a problem (I only went at a corner - I didn't want to ruin the unit... just wanted to see if a tiny portion would scratch).

The general build of the unit is great. From the Kevlar to the screen and you get a great feel for how strong it is.

Unfortunately I didn't get to play with the camera and software but I will try tomorrow.

One thing that rattles around in my mind is it may be too thin, either that or they just didn't round out the back. It may not have been possible based on what they were trying for.

That's the only thing keeping me looking at the Nexus. The pictures of the Nexus show it's a very well rounded device.

However, I don't like Samsung, I don't like the non-gorilla glass front, and it may be TOO long.

I don't believe its going to be a huge problem. But I am gonna try to do a video with a unit tomorrow.

I played with one at VZW today for a minute and I was impressed.

The phone is very thin. The kevlar is cool...it's quite soft. You could press on it, and it would give a little...interesting. Very smooth. I saw the word silky used up thread...that's a good description. I tried like hell to scratch it with my fingernails and could not.

I'm going to get it...the thing is slick.

So it scratches on the back and it doesn't. It has screen door effect and it doesn't. Make up your minds people! I guess I'll have to wait until when fedex drops mine off on Friday.
