Razr vs GN question

Thank you all very much for the feedback. I live in a mountain area where a strong radio is very important so I will hold on to my upgrade until i start hearing that samsung has improved or fixed reception on this phone . (but I still really want bloat free gn phone so I am keeping my fingers crossed)

IMO its a crap shoot for a decent working G Nex for reception right now. Thats about all I can say. My experience ended with the 4.0.3 radios. Pretty soon there will be newer phones on the horizon too...

Even with all of our anecdotal experiences...it usually still is best just to get it and try it for yourself. Depending on what you want from your phone, outta your phone, they are both good, great choices.

And as of right now....any LTE phone on Verizon can have data issues. Growing pains of LTE network and LTE technology. Look past that and see which phone is the best fit for you.

I've had my Gnex since Dec. and the signal strength has been terrible. I've never really let it get to me until today when I was in a bar in NYC and the person to the left (RAZR) had 3G and the person to my right (my old Tbolt that I sold her) had 3G as well and both had three bars of phone service. My Gnex had 1X and hit 3G maybe twice. I had between zero and 1 bar for phone and was unable to send a text. This was the case the entire time we were there as I kept looking at both phones. I think I'm about done with this and wil be using my upgrade in May to get something new. I love everything about the phone but there really is no excuse for the poor signal. And yes, I'm rooted and have tried all available radios and I'm currently on 4.0.4 and while the hand off from 3G to 4G and back is much faster and smoother, it's done nothing for my signal strength/quality. It's a shame, too cause I was very excited for this phone.

Never thought I would be in the same boat but they have my area's 4g to be upgraded this year (Lehigh Valley).

If there was ever a phone to rival the worst phone released with Android, this would be on the list. Is ICS great? Yes.
Is it a great multimedia device? Absolutely.
Can you depend on it to make a call or get your gps within a mile accuracy? Crapshoot.

I feel like I need to buy a prepaid phone and keep it in my car in case I need a phone to make a call.

It is hard to quantify the true percentage of phones with problems, as you only get anecdotal evidence from a forum such as this. I also read the horror stories about the GN. My son-in-law, who seems to have had every Android phone ever made, told me to go ahead and get it, but be prepared to use the return policy if needed. His take is that all phones have good/bad qualities, so the user experience is situational. He was right. Not to say that problems don't exist, but each person's experience will vary. In my experience, I live in a low signal area, but have had no issues at all. Best wishes on your decision, whatever you decide.

tap'd from my GNex

Razr has better signal strength dont care what anyone says. My girl has the razr i came from the razr side by side she can be on the phone and i can't make calls. So if signal is ur main concern would go with the razr but i like everything else about the nexus just my 2 cents

This.

(never posted that before but it seems like the in thing to do lol)
agree with every word in this post.

The numbers of bars that show up for my signal strength have always been pretty low but it hasn't affected reception. Haven't had any dropped calls or lost internet connections so far.

I have had five different Android phones, and the nexus has as bad of signal as my droid inc 2 did. Many times the signal is so low I can't send a text or use internet. My Droid charge has signal in the areas my nexus doesn't. Moto has the best radios. What good is paying for data when you can't use it?

just putting in my 2 cents here, the GN is seriously one of the best phones I've personally ever used and I have used quite alot. I love stock android vs any custom skins and this screen is absolutely the best screen I've ever laid my eyes on. I picked the GN over both the Rezound and the RAZR, it was a tough choice but after using the other 2, I just fell in love with the GN

I went through 3 Galaxy Nexus's. And now have the Droid Razr. I shouldve got this phone from the start.

I'm taking my GN to Verizon store today for exchange.
1. Screen is dim on full brightness, hard to see in daylight let alone in the sun.
2. Constantly dropping 4G/3G, no signal at all for 3-5 minutes and it happens every time I browse or use any data related apps.
3. Screeching and popping during every other call. I have to call back to get rid of it and continue talking.
4. With the extended battery the phone still only lasts 5-6 hours with moderate use and 1 hour of phone calls.
5. The camera is pathetic in terms of quality of pictures next to my old Droid Charge
6. Speaker volume is too low and volume+ didn't make much difference.

I have used stock first and then unlocked boot loader and flashed 4.0.4 - no difference in any of the above issues.

I should have listened to the forum members but I followed a general rule that forum complaints are just a small fraction of the rest who are enjoying the phone.
Well that maybe true but I've had a lot of different android phones including OG, DX, LG Revo, Droid Charge and never had any issues like that.
Google and Samsung rushed this phone to come out at the same time as iP4s and it shows

I bought the phone on day one. I've done a roadtrips and traveled through airports in that time and I've experienced no signal problems or problems making phone calls.

Obviously, there are people experiencing problems with the phone, but it's almost impossible to know what the percentage is by reading a forum like this one.

The Galaxy Nexus displays a true signal strength. Almost every phone exaggerates the signal strength. One of the iPhones did this and they had to dumb it down b/c people would rather be lied to than to see the real signal. I hope Google doesn't it change it, but it has been confusing to people from day one.

When the browser errors out or you tube stops playing is when the signal is gone, it doesn't matter that the bars show grey with an x

I don't quite get what some people here are saying about the "true" signal strength. My test of true signal strength/quality is being able to stream Netflix or Youtube during my bus ride home. Something I was easily able to do with my Tbolt. I might get the 4G icon on the phone and be it true or otherwise, I'll be buffering all the way home. The bottom line is that the Gnex, mine anyway, isn't able to get and hang on to 3G/4G as well as my previous phone. If what I had before with my Tbolt was a "false" data reading then I'll take the false of that phone over the "true" of the Gnex any day.

I just sent two Gnex back to amazon and cancelled my new verizon contract due to the radio issues. The data speeds were abysmal compared to every other phone they had on display at the verizaon store, mind you they did not have a vGnex on display (I wonder why).

Just for conmparizon, my gnex in the verizon store was slower that my at&t samsung infuse on EDGE in the verizon store.

I was curious about the vs. Situation too. Subscription placed :D

OK. First question. Sorry if this was covered way back...for those of you that returned or are returning your nexus. Does Verizon offer you a regular razr or the maxx?

By the way, I just wanted to clarify that I'm not trashing the phone in any way shape or form. I'm not here to talk crap about this phone. Only here to state what for me has been fact. I like this phone and were it not for the terrible radio issues, I would highly recommend this phone.

So far, as for me, fairly clear signal except for at my school. But call quality is nearly crystal clear.

No radio issues since day 1 and I have traveled all over the state of Michigan and also travel to Chicago, Toronto, and Cleveland all by car using GPS or other things on the phone with no problems. All calls have been as clear as my other Android phones, I'm very satisfied with performance.
