Razr vs GN question

I was in the same boat as the OP and finally ordered a GN (for $149 no less). I am at the end of my 14 day return window and I will not be keeping the phone. My first phone had constant signal and call drops. Swapped out the SIM and the same result. Second one is better (no calls dropped) but signal is weak. Much weaker than my Charge. I have never dropped a call but data signal is much weaker than the other phones. Too bad because the GN could be the almost perfect phone is the radio was stronger. I am going to miss ICS.

Did you do a speed test dman? Because I will have 1 or 2 bars around my area because its in the boonies but I still get 11-15 mbps download and 1-6 mbps upload. It seems like the the signal isn't as "strong" as other phones but the quality of it, for me at least, is just as good because I did a speed tests. My pops has a Razr and we went out to dinner the other night so I did a comparison of signal which he had slightly better but both the phones had the same speeds. My friend has a GNex and he returned his first one because of poor data signal but the one he currently has gets great signal and at his house he has 4 bars(not in a city) with speeds of 25mbps download and 15mbps upload.

When inside of a building i get crap service, however outside i have excellent 4G reception. Recently i switched to a D2G (GNex broke, water damage) and in my class room the GNex would have 1-2 bars of 3G and the D2G got 4-5 bars of it. However outside i get full 4G bars :)

bottom line: Signal is not as good, but good enough. Battery life is short, but so are the other phones, charge it for an extra 20mins a day and youll be fine.

The Galaxy Nexus displays a true signal strength. Almost every phone exaggerates the signal strength.

Not exactly... The G Nex shows the true data signal. Most other phones show the true phone signal. The G Nex puts data readings as a priority over phone readings. IMO it should be the way it is with other phones....since these are phones....We really need to try to be more accurate with this. I know most ppl took the Anandtech article and ran with it instead of reading it fully and understanding it, comprehending it.

The only phone I can think of right now that does it right it the LG Revolution, it shows both in Settings. Maybe on the home screen too. And so far I see Sprint phones show 4G data reception as bars separate from the phone reception. Verizon shows up/down arrows for 4G data...

I don't quite get what some people here are saying about the "true" signal strength. My test of true signal strength/quality is being able to stream Netflix or Youtube during my bus ride home. Something I was easily able to do with my Tbolt. I might get the 4G icon on the phone and be it true or otherwise, I'll be buffering all the way home. The bottom line is that the Gnex, mine anyway, isn't able to get and hang on to 3G/4G as well as my previous phone. If what I had before with my Tbolt was a "false" data reading then I'll take the false of that phone over the "true" of the Gnex any day.

Exactly. At the end of the day...real world use is all that matters....for anything.

I went through 3 Galaxy Nexus's. And now have the Droid Razr. I shouldve got this phone from the start.

Reading the issues you were having...I had a feeling it would be at least a lil better with the RAZR.

I don't know why this whole is steered towards how GN displays the signal in the notification bar.
It's not about it at all.
My LG Revo and Droid Charge never lost a connection.
GN on the other hand every 5 minutes clicking on a web link would error with No Connection pop up
Anyway I just returned mine and waiting on more info about the upcoming Moto Fighter, should be an interesting device.
For now back to Charge and all is well again
