RCS Chat Features

I just noticed that after the latest update to the Message app, Google has enabled the (RCS) Chat Features on the 7.1!

Has anyone else noticed this! Are these features of any use? Or do they put our identity and privacy at risk? From what I've seen in the description of the Chat Features it looks like Google will have even more access to out conversations, more data storage taking place...

There is also now also a real time addition to the Spam Protection, meaning that now if you enable it, not only will you get the Block/Report Spam notification, but Google will now be monitoring your messaging activities in real time...

Anybody has more information about this? Are these additional features to Messaging useful or should they be disabled?

PS Oh and by the way, all those features are automatically enabled after the update, and independently of the Carrier Services app... whose reason for existing I fail to see once again...

Can't find the option on my 7.1 am I missing a brain cell?

It depends whether or not your Messages app has been updated to the version wherein these features are enabled.

So for RCS Chat: go to the three ••• > Setting > Chat Features > Enable Chat Features> enable them and that is that. If you get a message saying "Status: Setting up (that appears written in orange) and underneath it as says "Trying to verify your phone number..." and that doesn't change, then it means that your carrier doesn't support RCS Chat. Not much you can do about it...until your carrier does.

Oh and the Carrier Services app, which apparently supports all these enhanced features has proven, at least for me, to be useless. It's done nothing but drain my battery. So I disabled it and un-installed it.

For the Spam Protection go to: the three ••• > Settings > Advanced > Spam Protection > Enable Spam Protection > do that and there you go...

If I were you I'd read the notifications about how your privacy and the contents of you chats and messages will be affected once you turn on/enable these features. Beware...

Thank you. My brain cell returned after your reply. I had already enabled it and my carrier, Vodafone, does support RCS.

Glad I could help...for once...and I'm glad your features work. I'm the same. Still trying to figure out this device. So... your brain cell never went anywhere...LOL...We all come here to ask and answer questions and get help with stuff we don't know or have forgotten about. 👍👍✌️

It's interesting, I have a pixel 3XL on Q Beta 5 update all application versions in Play store, Have the RCS provisioning gone on Verizon system, and beta 3 RCS work fine, but hasn't worked since beta 3! Just thought I'd chime in here tried everything multiple multiple times that still verified number status which does not change. Haven't been able to use RCS in months!

Same here. I went back and enabled the features, but the status remains unchanged. I doubt my carrier will ever support these or any other enhanced features.

I wish Google went ahead and just bypassed these douchebags...in fact I wish Google had its own networks...and not have to rely on carriers period... ugh...

Well, in the future, Google will be taking out the carriers as a middleman and offering RCS directly to us. However, for the meantime, most carriers I believe support RCS for example Verizon my account has already provisioned for RCS Rich communication services. also, the fact that RCS messaging and Andrew messages worked in beta 3 but not in any other beta and Android Q it is just really freaking weird! like I said, no matter how many trouble shooting steps and no matter how many times I've tried to diagnose the issue I can't. Now that can anyone else on this forum! Google blames Verizon Verizon plans Google and I refuse to call anyone of the companies back yet because there's just a waste of my time if you know what I mean. just like everyone else here, I would just love a straightforward way on how to fix this RCS issue if it really is a problem that we can fix easily as users.

Well RCS Chat is no longer an issue for me. My carrier "fixed the problem" according to a text they sent me. When I checked the Messages App, I went looking for the Chat Features...and now instead of the orange lettered message "Trying to verify your phone number...", now it says "Chat Features unavailable for this device."

How lovely! I really love my carrier and it's support for me as a customer...😡😠🤬

Still working for me on Vodafone in the UK. Very odd really because Voda normally screw up everything. Here's hoping it lasts.

Well, they’ll happily sell you an iPhone and give you iMessage as I’m sure they’ve offered.

Like I said, none of this RCS chat news matters unfortunately if Apple doesn't enable it on their end either! That's got to be the most frustrating point for all of us!
