[Read This] Pre-Paid Answers [Info Here]

About a week bump! A lot of questions being asked about this stuff. Maybe we can wrangle them together and sticky this.

This must be my lucky day; I neglected to pre-pay for these answers, yet here they are.

Awesome thread -- Bump!

I've been using an AT&T ST sim in both an IP4s and a GNEX for over a year and have been very satisfied. Recently set up a bunch of friends with ST as well. I am looking forward to slipping my sim in my new N4. Glad to see over folks jumping on the prepaid bandwagon!

Cheers

Unfortunatly you have exceeded your monthly post limited, and you will now be throttled to EDGE speeds. $130 please.

:)

Sincerely, thank you and again; the folks that made this information.

Can someone explain more about the "porting your number to google voice" thing. What are the advantages and disadvantages if any. Sorry if this is a dumb question but Ive been living in the apple walled garden for the last few years. Thanks!

Google Voice (which works on Apple devices just as well as any other) is a service that gives you a permanent phone number that's not locked to any given handset. You can set up the number to ring or send texts via any phone you chose (smart, dumb, feature, doesn't matter), you can set up different rules for how calls/texts are are handled for different contacts or situations (send mother-in-law directly to voicemail, let calls from family members ring on this phone but business calls on that phone, etc). Texts and voicemails can be accessed on the web, your basic Google data-in-the-cloud kind of thing.

Google voice assigns you a number when you sign up, but getting all your friends, family, customers, etc to change your number in their phones and address books is a major pain. Instead, you can transfer (ie "port") your existing number to Google Voice (or, for that matter, to any new cellphone plan you set up, it's legally mandated in the US) so that your number stays the same.

I made the no contract switch a few months ago and I couldn't be happier. I am on T-Mobile monthly 4G plan now. Signal strength in DFW area is about average. I am contemplating moving to ST but I have heard horror stories of users getting terminated by data overage.

Question for T-Mobile $30 prepaid folks..
I read in another thread somewhere (I can't find it now), that someone said it's faster/easier to activate your prepaid plan over the phone with a CSR from T-Mobile? Is this true from anyone's experience here? I thought by going on T-Mobile's website would be the fastest/easiest and there's no human intervention :) Just type in the SIM/phone codes, pick your plan, payment plan and your done?
Thanks!

Online is generally easier because the CS rep on the phone can (and often will) make mistakes. They're also technically not supposed to offer the $30 5GB plan on the phone, it's supposed to be "online only", and sometimes they'll sign you up for the other $30 plan that's 1500 minutes and like 50MB of data.

I'd try to do it online, it'll work just fine there. If you run into issues you can call CS.

And, as Andrew mentioned, if you do run into issues, use your cell phone to call 611 rather than a landline. I was on hold for an hour and 50 mins this afternoon trying to get an activation code fixed. I finally gave up and used my cell phone. 5 minutes tops and I was done.

Coolio, thanks guys! One more question please :) Do you know if once I activate everything online, and I'm going to have them assign me a new phone#, can I call them using the 611 as soon as I'm done to possibly re-assign me a number that may be "easier/better"? you know, like an easier prefix, etc kinda thing. I'm only going to try out the $30 plan for a month or two and if I like it/TMobile, then I'll probably switch myself and my wife to a regular Unlimited talk/text/data Family plan. But seeing how TMobile is good in places/bad in others around town, I don't want to quite commit to TMO just quite yet.

Thanks again!

I called and activated my SIM with a CSR cause their site was throwing errors when I tried. When I asked for the $30 plan, he stated some BS about that he is not supposed to do it for me over the phone since its only a walmart plan, but he would do me the favor anyway. All in all the call took about 5 minutes.
