Receiving the message "Something went wrong: Google Play doesn't seem to be working right now."

When I open Android Auto, I receive that message and the app closes.

What is going wrong?

I am running Android 7.0 on an HTC M9.

Welcome to Android Central! Does the phone otherwise work normally on mobile data? Have you tried clearing the app cache/data for Android Auto in Settings>Apps​?
