Ok guys I bought a Photon on Friday and just really want to know is the reception really better then other sprint phones. I mean I know that it shows more bars then all my other phones I have had but I don't think the signal is actually stronger when I do a comparison with a co-workers Nexus S 4g the dBm is almost identical while his shows 1 bar my photon shows 4 bars. What is your experiance with this.
Thanks for any input.

I drive a dump truck for a living and I'm out and about all over Florida. My OG Evo 4G (which now the wife has) only lost signal and dropped calls in the middle of nowhere which has only been a handful of times. My new Evo 4G I got for my daughter (which I used for a week) is on par with my OG Evo 4G. With this said, signal was consistant and steady and overall happy.

Now, the 3 Evo 3D's I had went into roaming whenever it felt like it and would drop calls almost worse than AT&T. At my house here where I have great signal, my 3D's would fluctuate between roaming and 4 bars depending on which way I was standing. My wife would call and all would be fine till I would decide to walk outside and get a cig and it would start to break up. This wasn't here and there, this was consistant. On the road, the 3D was worthless. I was roaming more than anything else. I wouldn't care to much, but it dropped calls for no reason...unnacceptable.

Today was the test with the photon as I just got it yesterday (traded my evo 3d). Rock solid signal. I dropped one call but I was in a known bad area to begin with. Otherwise, wife said she could here me much...MUCH more clearly and it was solid. Only went into roaming once (in that bad area) otherwise I had 4-6 bars everywhere I went and the calls I made and received proved it. So yes, this Photon...IMHO...has a much stronger radio so the signal was outstanding. In your case though with your friend, side by side can give you an idea what it's like there at that moment. Now get in a car and drive around into wishy washy areas and watch that Photon perform!

after i have been using this phone for a while i dont think the reception is any. better

Compared to my Epic, I'm finding the Photon's signal to be better and more consistent, and call quality to be outstanding. I was having a number of dropped calls with the Epic that I was blaming on my wife's outdated Treo 650 (which she absolutely loves and refuses to give up), and that I'm now pretty sure were actually the Epic. I haven't dropped a call or otherwise experienced a single issue with coverage or connections since picking up my Photon last Sunday.

And that's not even accounting for the much better call quality on both ends.

signal is way better, my epic was constantly roaming at my house, my photon gets 4 bars (yeah I know it doesn't mean anything) and I've yet to drop a call with it.

Seen many reputable reviews gushing over it, supposedly motorola uses good radios.

The Photon absolutely pulls in a much better signal as well as 3G & 4G data connections are consistent, stable and much faster than any HTC EVO. With me and my wife's EVO's we get fluctuating signal here at home and data is almost useless and rarely connects. My new Photon suprised me with it's awesome signal reception. Call quality is EXCELLENT on the Photon and even my wife has told me more than once how good it sounds on her end of the conversations. Speaker sound/quality is also EXCELLENT. My EVO 3D has terrible signal and goes into roaming in marginal coverage areas while my Photon gets good signal and data connection and actually works great. That's real world evidence that the Photon IS a better phone than others.

I know how your wife feels about her Treo 650
Now that you have a Photon you might want to take her to the sprint store and let her play with the Motorola XPRT. It's the closest thing I have seen to a Treo

That's EXACTLY what I've been thinking. She doesn't have a contract (of course, given the Treo, she better not have one! :)), so she can upgrade anytime she wants, and I've been trying to talk her into getting a new phone for awhile. The XPRT definitely looks like a good choice. If it has the same phone quality as the Photon, I think it'll be easier to convince her to make the jump.

I am on lakes in northern Wisconsin most weekends. With the Photon I will can get and makes calles even though I am roaming and showing 1 bar at best. My EVO would never do this.

I work in a high rise and have never been able to get good service. I had the evo and just change to the photon....I have 5 bars all day!!

You can get an app that gives actual connection values as bars mean nothing. It's about the same as my Evo, but call clarity has been better for me.

Sent from my Photon

I also agree that the signal is better.

Coming from a Blackberry 9650, the signal was really bad where I work and would always drop calls. With my Photon, I have not dropped one yet.

Have seen more then one reviewer say that in deadzones they have had with Sprint on other phones, they can make calls on the Photon.

Been using since August 1. I had an HTC Hero before. The radio on the Photon is much better than the Hero in my daily business use in downtown Chicago. In Louisville where I live, the reception was about the same, but, I have always had good coverage in Louisville.

I did a comparison with the Evo 3d in the Sprint store. The Photon kept the signal more consistently in the store. In a call comparison, the Photon was much clearer on both ends of the call.

My wife has been a crackberry addict for years, but, after playing with the Photon this past weekend, she is consdering upgrading to it.

Just as an aside, I was an avid fan of Motorola phones in the 90s. Then gave up on them due to quality and durability. This one convinced me to give them a try again.

Good job Motorola!

Btw, IMHO, I think the forum poll is going to be skewed because of how new the Photon is. Not nearly as many people using it yet.
