recover files on 6P after backup and reset.

after the OTA install of 7.0 I started to have issues with my 6P freezing many times in a day. FInally decided to do a backup and reset last week and phone has been running well again. Was warned about loss of data. Backed up my photos and documents. Completely forgot about a number of audio files recorded with the Smart Recorder app a few months back. Those audio files appear to be gone. I have seen some file recovery apps. Would I be able to recover those files with that type of software? Or might those audio files be somewhere in the backup (not sure what is really backed up in the backup and reset process) The recovery software requires rooting. I know the 6P allows for easy rooting but I'm not that technical and there is always a warning or a story of something bad happening. I don't care about rooting, and would not do it anyway but I would do a root if I could get the files back. And I would want to unroot later. Is the Nexus toolkit a good option for rooting and unrooting? Thanks for any help.

You'd have to point out which specific file recovery applications you're referring to - please provide links. Generally speaking though I'd consider those files gone; it's probably not worth the time and money to try to recover them.

Edit: NRT is a great tool to use; constantly being updated; well supported.

Dr. Fone, Undeleter, FoneLab and Jihosoft Android phone recovery are some of the software options I have seen. I am not partial to any of them, They are all free to try but do cost to purchase. Dr. Fone claims to be #1 downloaded. The main focus of their ads is towards the person who accidentally deleted a file, which is different than my reset. But they also seem to claim the ability to recover files after a reset. I am resigned to the loss but am willing to try if there is hope. No harm in trying but want to make sure there really is no harm in trying.

I'd agree with the 'accidental deletion' recovery capabilities; not so much for Factory Reset recovery. I don't know if the OS sets a new encryption key after performing a Factory Reset, but I'd have to bet that something like that is in place to prevent unscrupulous folks from doing what you are describing.

Perhaps you could get a more definitive answer from Jerry, or the folks over at XDA.

The problem here is that your phone most likely still has the bootloader locked AND your files are encrypted. In order to root your phone, that bootloader will need to be unlocked... but unlocking the bootloader wipes the phone and resets the encryption... so even if you grab yourself a recovery tool, any data blocks that remain on the internal storage will be encrypted, rendering them unusable.

Going forward... there are easy ways to avoid this in the future. Use Google Photos to back up your photos and videos. And for the rest? Look at a tool like FolderSync... which can go in and sync the contents of the internal storage to a cloud storage account like Google Drive or OneDrive.

Cool, which one is better and all of them require rooting? I search on google and find some one recommend another MobiKin Doctor for Android, has anybody used it before?

This one only works for rooted phones, if your device is non-rooted, you need try the other choices.
