Recovery mode doesn't show up?

I have a really old phone that needs to be reset for a friend. It's a Samsung ace 2x that's running Ice cream sandwich I believe. They forgot the passcode so I was going to go into recovery mode to reset it but it wasn't appearing. Volume up, home button, power button just cause the phone to endlessly vibrate. It vibrates like a 2 second pulse. Download mode doesn't work either. Any idea what's going on? Is the button combination different on the older devices?
