red triangle explanation mark

Simple root is kosher, its open source.

Theres no reason not to do simple root, it does everything. Including flashing a recovery, when youre done rooting with it, before you close it and unplug your phone, hit extras and flash clockwork recovery.

Awesome!! Go to VaelPak settings. Everything you see there is available as an ota download. And everything after the download is done automatic so you don't have to flash anything. Kernels, radios, power bar mod, bunch of other stuff. Itll wipe and flash by itself. There's a lot of kernels in there to try if you ever get curious. 15 of them actually. If its an app you still have to install it manually.

Having some problems rooting a friend's phone.

He just got the EVO a few days ago and wanted me to root it.

I did the stickied method to revert to 2.1 which went fine.

Then I used the simpleroot method above.

When I get to Flash Recovery I get a bunch of read/write errors in the cmd window. Phone then restarts and stays at red Triangle screen.

Tried with 2 different SD cards. One of them being from my phone which works perfectly when flashing anything.

Any ideas?

Are you sure you have USB debugging on? That happened to me when I rooted a friends a while back using Simple Root trying to flash RA. I had USB debugging off.

boot into the bootloader and tell me your Hboot number in the top left cornor.

I ran out of time. My friend had to leave. I ran a PC36IMG of 2.2 I found on XDA and applied all updates to phone.

Was very frustrating that I could not figure it out. :-(

Not sure if Unrevoked would have worked better but I didnt feel safe running it.

Nope, i have a feeling it was just that he has the new Hboot, 2.02 which needs an extra step in order to get S-off and flash a custom recovery.

He can still Root, no phone is safe from the root monster

i'm downloading this simpleroot. what does this thing do exactly. cuz that's a purtty big file.

Edit: nevermind. reread the thread.

I bought an Evo yesterday that came with this info in the bootloader:
SUPERSONIC EVT2-3 SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-2.02.0000
MICROP-041f
TOUCH PANEL-ATMELC03_16ac
RADIO-2.15.00.09.01
Oct 14 2010, 19:14:47

and software information shows:

Baseband 2.15.00.09.01
Software #: 3.30.651.2

I tried the rooting method from [TOOL][ROOT][GUIDE] HBoot 2.02 S-OFF - Updated - xda-developers but couldn't complete it. I got to step 8, flashed PC36IMG.zip and booted up to a red triangle. During the PC36IMG flashing, I got a message saying Fail-PU when it was at the radio part of the flash. At that point I could no longer ADB into the phone and rebooting brought me back to the screen with red triangle.

I have recovered by flashing back to stock RUU v3.30.651.2.

Thanks in advance

Does anyone know how to get the newer phone version rooted? I've searched here and XDA without finding anything so far.
