Refurbished S24 Ultra - S-Pen not detected

I bought an S24 Ultra off ebay. In short, I think the internal components for the S-Pen aren't working. It's never connected. Nor with other S-pens from other Samsung Ultra models.

The seller did state that the back glass has been replaced. I watched a video to see what went into replacing it before deciding to proceed - seemed straightforward without any attached internal parts.

I've an S20 Ultra. The SPen from the S24 is recognized by my S20. The S20 SPen isn't sensed by the S24 when inserted - I believe it should. Went along to a mobile phone store ... inserted the S25 Ultra SPen into the S24 and it didn't sense it. The only thing the S24 SPen does, is work with the screen.

Diags all work except the 2 SPen and the wired headphones (no port, no test to perform, right?). I've tried the SPen reset. I applied Samsung updates. No dice.

The seller is playing nice, willing to accept a return for a full. Or, refund $100 if I keep the phone. I have until 6th to accept that offer. It did come with a 1 year warranty thru Allstate/SquareTrade.

I'm interested to hear thoughts on what other tests I can perform, how much it'd cost to repair, what other concerns/things to watch for (given whatever caused need for back replacement).

Welcome to Android Central forums. Sorry that you were not able to get a reply before the deadline. What did you decide I wonder? There are a couple of possibilities to consider. If you took the hundred bucks, you could use that to take the phone to a UBreakIFix type place and have them open the device and check that everything is connected. Watching JerryRigEverything's teardown video it looks like the only thing specific to the S-Pen in the device is the wireless charger but it could be something else that didn't get put back correctly. If the wireless charging pad wasn't connected the pen would go dead, losing WiFi connection but not likely affecting the use of the pen in other ways. The thing about this however is if you used a pen from another device that was charged this shouldn't be an issue. One thing to keep in mind when testing other pens though is turning on the option for the phone to, Allow multiple S-Pens. You can find this in the Settings>Advanced features>S Pen>More S Pen settings>Allow Multiple S Pens. The only thing about this theory is that you said other devices can recognize the S24's pen, and I assume in the normal way. This could account for other pens not being recognized by the S24 but not how the S24 pen is recognized by other devices but not its own... Still a little stumped on that one. But again if the only repair or incident with the phone involved the back glass being replaced reopening the phone to check out the connections is the only thing that seems to fit.

I wonder that might not be the correct pen for that device. If the Allow other S Pen option is turned off, and its not the OG pen and neither are the others, that could explain the performance. None of the pens can connect because none are the connected to the device and the option to allow them to is turned off... Just something to think about if you still have the device.

I certainly second the thought that eBay buyers beware. Recently had to return my s23 ultra, which was listed by a business seller with 99% positive feedback. It turned out to be not brand new, had a fake screen and was incapable of receiving security updates. They received it back on Saturday by Royal Mail Tracked and I’m still awaiting my refund.
 
Update to the above. Today I received a 50% refund from the seller, along with a message saying the phone was received back in a damaged and battered condition. This was accompanied by photos showing a completely different model of phone to the s23 ultra I returned to them! I immediately raised the matter with eBay and received the full balance of my refund within 15 minutes. Well done eBay. I’m disgusted with the seller though. After supplying a ‘new galaxy s23 ultra’, which actually wasn’t genuine; they then try to cheat me when I return it! (And all this from a business seller with excellent reviews and feedback).
Buyers beware indeed!

Hi Red, I have a suggestion, Next time you want to buy a phone check out Amazon as an alternative.

Further update; the seller emailed me again today, still insisting that the phone they received back from me is the one they sent me photos of; a completely different make and model! As I’ve received a full refund courtesy of eBay, I have now blocked the seller from contacting me again. What a bunch of fraudulent liars they are!
