Remove Hangouts white notification bar

I use Hangouts on my Moto 2014. Every time I get a text message I get a white notification bar with the name of the person who texted me and their text message. To read or reply to the text I have to touch the Hangouts icon because single or double taping the white notification does nothing and I cannot swipe to remove it. I only get this notification when the phone is on but not in screen lock mode. How do I stop this white notification bar from popping up?

I ended up using this guide below to disable the Heads Up Notification on my Note 4. Not sure if it will work for you, but i would give it a try.
