I would like to be able to make my own ROMS and kernels. I have Ubuntu 11.10 installed on my computer and I would like to - over the course of time, learn how to make a basic ROM. Cygwin + dsixda's android kitchen is pretty decent. I have some Java programming experience. I'm free for most of the week.

I'd reccommend you to stop using Dsixda's kitchen if you really want to learn... imo it's best to just go through preexisting roms, find out how stuff works, and start out with minor edits.

That's how I started at least.

that sounds pretty good. i just deleted it.

that's good.

also, you'll need notepad++, 7zip, apk manager for windows and apk manager and notepad++ (if they have it) for ubuntu.

i can help answer any questions you have to some extent as i do know some things (not a whole lot but still).

also i know that you'd like to port arearom to the slider. i just tested it on my slider (as i got a new phone) and everything works except home and menu are reversed. maybe you could try to fix that as it's pretty simple?

EDIT: but if you do fix it do NOT release it anywhere until the original creators tell you that you can.

General ROM FAQ

Its a basic guide but does teach and inform you to many of the basics of ROMs.... Its a good heads up to get started..

From there as others suggested, grab a few ROMs from your particular device and start looking at the filesystems and what makes them tick.

Good luck.

i deeply appreciate that

From a windows environment you need these programs...

Notepad++ (for editing smali, .xml, and .prop files as well as creating updater-scripts)
7-zip (for rezipping roms and editing .apks without decompiling *if ur edits don't require decompiling*)
Apk manager (for decompiling apks *I recommend apk manager over apk multitool)
Paint.net (for editing images)

I've done a lot of work learning to do some dev on these phones... as most people don't want to use linux id recommend starting out with the above. If you are going to use linux u only need apk manager (if you're using ubuntu). Google will be your best friend in this regard but there's no full comprehensive guide. Good luck!

id like to pick your brain if that's all right.

Pretty much anything you would want to do as far as modifications can be found in guides here, xda, etc.. just google it, or hit one of us, if we know how to do it, us Q devs are cool as hell and will likely help walk you through it.
