Restore contacts in Moto G 1st Gen

Hi all,

I have not synced my contacts to gmail nor did I take a backup of contacts and now accidentally a friend of mine synced the contacts and now i lost all the contacts.

all i am able to see are my gmail contacts. Is there any way that i can restore my previous contacts..

PS: I am using moto G 1st gen (XT1033)

Welcome to Android Central! If they were only stored locally in the Phone account and they were lost, then you can't get them back. Sorry! This is exactly why contacts should always be associated with your Google account, not the local Phone account.

Thanks for the reply Dibby..

But will the contacts be lost when you sync your google account ??

they shouldn't right ?

It's hard to answer that without knowing where your contacts are saved to. You said you haven't synced your contacts to gmail--do you mean that your contacts are saved to the local Phone account, and therefore not syncing with your Google account? Or do you mean that your contacts are saved to your Google account, but you turned off Auto-Sync and they haven't yet synced to your Google Contacts in the cloud?

They are saved in the local phone account..and i haven't synced the data to google account until now..

If you saved the contacts to the local phone account and you didn't do a factory reset, then they should still be there--have you checked the Contacts settings to make sure you're displaying contacts from all accounts?

If your friend synced his contacts to the phone, was it through Google contacts? Or did he use some other kind of syncing program to sync contacts from Outlook or some other source?

what my friend did was, he just turned on the notifications for gmail app in the normal phone settings and then he selected sync gmail from the settings in the gmail app.

thats all there is to it and just like that i lost my contacts. :(

Syncing Gmail shouldn't do anything to your Contacts app. Syncing Google Contacts will sync your contacts that are in your Google Contacts in the cloud, but again, shouldn't impact any locally saved contacts. Is the phone still logged in under your account, or did your friend somehow add his Google contact? Go to Settings>Accounts-Google, and see which Google account or accounts are listed.

Open your Contacts app and tap Menu. Is there an option for Contacts to Display? If so, tap it, and make sure your local Phone account is selected.

In the settings path only my google is present and in the contact settings it is selected as display all contacts and the phone is logged in with the same account :(

What happens if you use the main Google Search app to look for that contact? Does it show up at all? Make sure your Google Search app is set to search Contacts--open Google Search or Google Now, swipe in from the left, tap Settings>Phone Search, and make sure Contacts is checked on.

hi diddy, I searched in the google search app and it doesn't show the contacts, and the contacts is checked on in settings. :( :(

Sorry, I'm really not sure what happened to those contacts.:'( Is it a Verizon phone? If so, Phone contacts would've been entered into the Verizon Backup Assistant, and if you had that set up, they might have been backed up to your Verizon account.
