Android Central Question
People with dementia, or the elderly as a whole tend to struggle with the complexity of the mobile phone. Despite the vast array of phones available, ever increasing levels of technology and sensors, and vastly flexible operating systems, there does not seem to be any combination that I can find that offers a simpler user experience.
The question is ... is it possible to customise a mobile phone to provide only basic functionality, and with that functionality 'controlled' externally ?
For example, my father would require a phone that is easy to switch on (pressing any of the buttons, as he doesn't know which is which), disables everything except the ability to press a photo or text shortcut to make calls, and can be used to track the phone externally should he go walk-abouts. Things that can 'accidentally' be updated should also be disabled (eg volume up/down etc) as these can render the phone useless without him understanding what has happened.
Others may also have other requirements, eg incoming video calls but restricted to family members, 'spoken' reminders that the battery is low, etc.
For the external control, I would like to be able to update any phone numbers/photos etc, re-set volume levels and the like. Ideally remotely, but via USB to a PC would be fine too.
I am really surprised that there isn't already an Android version available that would provide this, but I am unable to locate one. I would also try to use the existing OS's, but all of them have apps that cannot be uninstalled or 'unnecessary' actions. (Try getting someone with dementia to swipe and drag, pinch etc, or to have to drag down the notifications bar to change brightness levels).
So, if there are any options (even to using the android SDK to 'build' something, I could use all the help I can get !
Regards
Vic
