So, I have the S20Ultra. I like it, but frustrated with the camera. Was thinking about returning, but I traded in my Note10plus. How would Best Buy handle this?

I decided to keep mine. I know it's a risk with hoping that they'll be able to fix the auto focus because other than that, after learning the ultras camera and owning and learning the S10 for a year, I was able to consistently get better photos and videos with the ultra. If they can pull off fixing the auto focus it will be golden.

When I returned my S10 last year purchased thru best buy they gave me a best buy gift card for the trade in value. That's because when they do the trade in it actually results in a best buy gift card that they apply to your purchase. You shouldn't have any issues returning and getting the trade in value as best buy gift card unless of course they have changed the way it's handled currently.

So for example. Phone is 1400, trade in is 700. You paid 700 out of pocket.

Return value would be 700. You won't get more than your out of pocket expense.

You will get $700 refunded back to your original form of payment because that's what you paid, and the remaining $700 will be issued as best buy gift card in your example.

Different retailers handle trade in their own way, that's how best buy does.
