Returning 16GB (RMA); new 32GB; how to proceed...

Hi, all.

Here's my situation. I got the 16GB eight days ago. Since I can return it to Google, it's going back (already have the RMA and UPS shipping label). I got the 32GB today at Staples. My 16GB is totally stock. I've been reading up on how to root it, but as I'd like to use mskip's Google Nexus 7 TOOLKIT, I was forced to wait, as the 16GB is at 4.1.2 JZO54K.

I don't have a ton of stuff to back up, at least data wise. I can use ES File Explorer to dump the APKs, but it sure would be nice to be able to do a full backup using Titanium or some such. This leads me to wonder....

Should I wait for mskip to support JZO54K, then root the 16GB, back it up, and then unroot it, as I assume that's what Google expects? If I'm not mistaken, the Toolkit will allow me to unroot it. If it turns out I can't wait that long, as I'll need to ship it back, will the built-in backup suffice? I read it's just for Google apps. In the end I don't mind starting mostly from scratch, as I've only had it for eight days.

Moving to the 32GB, I definitely want to root it, as I really want to add CifsManager. I've got a couple NASes, and it would be nice to have apps access them natively, rather than going through ES File Explorer's SMB mounts. From what I've read, it should come with 4.1.1. Here's how I think I should proceed:

* Refuse the OTA update
* Use the Toolkit to root the 32GB
* Install OTA Rootkeeper app and use it to backup su
* Install the OTA update
* See if I still have root access; if not, use OTA Rootkeeper to correct that
* Install CifsManager

and restore whatever I manage to backup in whatever form that takes.

Is that plan sound? If not, how can it be improved?

I really appreciate any advice!

Cheers.

The apps themselves will reinstall from the Play Store or you can do that easily.

Contacts, email, Google Docs documents, etc are all stored on Google's servers, not locally, but you can go to Google and log in to make sure all your contacts and stuff are there.

Any pictures you've taken with the camera, you can just email to yourself.

If you are using a non-stock launcher, chances are you can even export your icons and homescreen settings.

Other than that, you're pretty much looking at third party application settings, saved games, etc. Unless you've managed to get to level 130 on Angry Birds, there's honestly not a lot to back up.

I'd fire up the Staples one, refuse the update for now, set it up, and see what is "missing" before you bother backing anything up at all, really. If you're happy with what you get from that, factory reset the old one and send it out and apply the update on the new one. If you aren't happy, you can always look into your plan, which seems pretty sound.

Really the only thin

Thanks for the quick reply.

Good to know there's no point in rooting the 16GB just to backup not much.

And I think you answered the question I forgot to ask:
Is it sufficient and secure to do a Factory Reset (from within Settings, yes?) before returning it? That would be the last step. Obviously I don't want anything personally identifiable left on it.

Thanks again!

It really depends on what info you want to save. Any media is easy to transfer without need of backup. You can connect it to your PC and use the USB cable or you can do it through cloud.

The tougher would be saved game files if you are a hardcore gamer, then you would need to use a backup the program if it doesn't save on a server.

If you use productivity apps, look to see if there is a backup/save function to sdcard and then send it to cloud or pull it off by PC method.

Emails *should * be saved on servers unless you somehow told it not to. Depends on your provider.

Otherwise why not just OTA and then root? Mskip on xda was updated to handle 4.1.2

I don't have a ton of apps, so reinstalling/configuring them won't be too bad. I will definitely look into saving to the sdcard, and then to PC. That's my preferred method. I don't use it for email, and bookmarks are already syncing to the cloud.

re: OTA update, I'm monitoring his xda-dev thread to see when he supports 4.1.2 JZO54K. I haven't had time to read today, but last I checked, people were still waiting. If he gets there before I see the OTA update appear, sweet. If not, I'll work my plan.

According to the first post about the toolkit by mskip, v3.2.0 which was updated on 10/11 supports up to 4.1.2

Maybe we're looking at different threads. This is the sticky in N7 Android development section.

I just started reading from page 78 where I'd paused. Mark says, "It works perfectly with jzo54k." So, that's good news :-)
And now in the first post, this line has been updated to: "Root Stock Jelly Bean builds (upto 4.1.2 JZO54K)" It was at an earlier version/build when I first found his thread.

Gotcha. I would always recommend checking the first posts since active devs will update it accordingly.
