In a world full of chaos and doubt, when other cases fall by the wayside and fake leather runs rampant across the land… only one phone case company can save us from the madness: Nomad. Nomad’s cases shine through the darkness and bring sweet, sweet Horween leather with them to fight the Amazonian horde of cheap cases that don’t do your phone justice. Wrapped in the ultimate American-made leather, you can bravely wield your phone in both professional and personal settings, having wrapped your phone in 6ft of drop protection and eye-popping class. This is… the Rugged Case, by Nomad.

The Looks: Pretty epic intro huh? Well, it’s not without merit. Nomad – in my opinion – makes the bestest leather cases for your phone that the mainstream market has to offer. Their cases are made from with a polycarbonate shell with rubberized bumpers, and beautiful Horween leather on the back. Horween Leather is an American company that has been around since 1905 and is well-known for their exquisite materials. One of the wonderful things about the leather that Nomad uses in their cases is that it develops a rugged patina overtime. This “patina” that I speak of is kind of like “breaking in” the leather. It starts off pristine, fresh, and clean, and over time it slowly darkens and acquires beauty marks and develops its own unique personality that is unique and refined. This is illustrated on the back of the box that the case comes in. I also illustrated it a bit in my video by doing a side-by-side comparison with my Nomad wallet, which I’ve been toting around for a while. Unfortunately, the Rugged Case for the Pixel 3XL only comes in the Rugged Brown color – some of the other cases come in the gorgeous Black color. However, the Brown color is no slouch, and looks fantastic!

The Feel: The texture of the case changes a little with time. When you first take it out of the box, the leather is in pristine condition, untouched (mostly) by human hands – which means that it’s like a blank leather tapestry. As you use it more, the initial dry and more slick feeling fades away as it develops more a well-worn feeling, which helps to make it less slick. Additionally, the bumpers are rubberized and have ample grip so that you don’t have to worry about dropping your phone. One of the nice changes in this iteration of the Rugged Case is that Nomad shaved down the thickness a little bit, making it 33% thinner. I think this was a step in the right direction because the original models did feel a little on the thick side. Overall, the phone case looks and feels as high dollar as the money that your paid for it. It’s a gem of a case.

Security: Security may not be the first thing you think of when you look at the Rugged Case, but it packs a whopping 6ft of drop protection, which is pretty ridiculous for a relatively thin leather case. It’s lighter than its predecessors but it doesn’t sacrifice any of its protection, which is largely thanks to the polycarbonate shell that serves as the foundation for the case. This case is built from the ground up with security, and refined aesthetics in mind. While you won’t be wanting to take it near the pool, it’s suitable for most any occasion, and is sure to catch a few eyes if you use it out in public. The case also has a felt-like material on the inside of the case to prevent the back of your phone from getting scratches. Additionally, like pretty much every other case on the market these days, the Rugged Case also has raised edges around the screen to protect your phone if you place it face-down on a flat surface, the camera is recessed, and the case still allows you to use wireless charging!

Conclusion: The case is a work of art, and really looks fantastic. Not only does it look fantastic, but it feels fantastic and it offers top-notch security for your phone. The only real downside is the cost – if you can really call it a downside. Yes, it’s definitely more expensive than most normal cases on the market, but I assure that this case is far from normal. Each case is as unique as the owner, which is evident in the development of the patina of the leather. I definitely give this case two thumbs up!

Fantastic review! Surprised this isn't front page :) I will say, I wish the leather wrapped around the edges like the Bellroy case. I personally MUCH prefer the brown of the Nomad to the "caramel" of the Bellroy. If the Bellroy came in this shade of leather, I'd get it in a heartbeat.

The nomad case is nice, but i am thinking about the Bellroy since they have a wallet version. Thanks for the review!

Thanks for the compliment! I wish it was on the front page. :) lol. But, regardless... it's a solid case. I've used and reviewed several Nomad cases, and I've a big fan.

I got my Nomad case and I love it. I did notice a horizontal line across the case (about an inch from the middle of the case). Maybe a manufacturing defect, but not really paying too much attention to it as the leather will age with time and develop a unique character.

I use it during the work week and put on a more robust impact protection case during weekends when I'm usually out and about....

Although I'm confused about Nomad's marketing... "Designed for Adventure"... I usually don't think of leather and outdoor adventure on the same sentence, but oh well.. jajajajaja

I just saw they now make a Moment lens compatible case for the iPhone X/XS. I really hope they do the same for the Pixel line. I LOVE my moment lenses, but not so much the case you have to use.
