Roaming / poor network connection

Talked to a tier 2 tech and he seemed to think it was more of a Network issue. He put out a Trouble Ticket so they would check into things further. I have to wait until Monday to see if they find anything. Hopefully this gets sorted out soon.

I had the exact same issues. Great signal at home but in rural areas I would get zero signal (not even 1x) where I would have 2 or 3 bars of 3G with my Razr Maxx. (Side by side with my ipad , the tablet had 3g signal and the Note # had no signal) It must have been a known problem because w/in 5 minutes of speaking with a tier 2 rep. they authorized a new phone. Problem solved and good signal everywhere. Now I'm arguing with Verizon because the replacement phone is "refurbished". It hasn't had any problems but I paid full price (to keep unlimited data) for a new phone that worked. and what I got was a "used" phone that worked.

I would ask for a replacement SIM card. Sometimes they can cause issues with connecting to the network.

I've got a similar problem. My PRL is current and I'm on my second phone. The first one had the power button glitch, where you press the bottom of the button and it sticks.

When I leave home my WiFi Matic app lets go of the wifi signal so the phone hits the airwaves but frequently comes back with 3G. I'm not in a strong LTE area but the problem is that it will stay on 3G wherever I drive until I engage and then release airplane mode. My phone is set for LTE and not global.

Edit: Just spoke to Verizon customer support. First, they told me something I didn't know. Checking "auto network switch" under advanced wifi options should be able to replace my WiFi Matic app. So I've done that and disabled the app. Let's see if it works when I get home. Second, she said try the SIM card swap. Third option would be factory reset. Which I hate doing. We didn't discuss network issues but I did tell her my Note 2 never experienced this.

They finally decided to just send me a new phone and sim card. I got the new phone already but I'm still waiting for the sim to show up. I don't work again until Thursday so I'll have to wait until then to see if it was a phone issue. If it still roams I'll try the new sim card + the new phone. If it still roams after that then I have no clue what to do next.

I have similar issues. But it happens at home a lot. So frustrating

I've been at work for nearly two hours now with the new phone and it hasn't roamed yet! Guess I just got a defective one the first time. Here's hoping that it stays working like this!

What PRL is your phone running at this time?

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 (Verizon)

I'm having a very similar problem with my Verizon Galaxy Note 3. I got mine in October and it has been great, none of the voice quality issues that others have had.

About a week ago my phone started going in and out of roaming at home. The 1x signal averages around -82dbm and the LTE signal is around -104. The LTE signal is stable, but the 1x signal will suddenly jump to -100 or more and I will have no connection and it will roam and then eventually come back. I can't make a call or send a text during this time, even though it shows a decent signal and roam. I never have problems anywhere else. My signal seems rock solid at work and everywhere I go. My wife's LG G2 doesn't have near as good of a 1x signal (-88dbm to -96 dbm). Her phone never roams, never has call quality issues.

I have had 5 calls with Verizon and 1 with Samsung this week. Verizon re-provisioned my line which made me think it was fixed as I didn't roam for more than 5 hours then it started roaming and went back to as it was. I finally did a hard reset today at Samsung and Verizon's suggestion. No luck at all, just a major pain. I will see if they will replace my sim card tomorrow. I don't know where to go from there. My phone works great everywhere but home. Verizon did check my area and said the towers are working fine. One caveat, this started not long after the latest update in late December to fix connectivity issues. If it was that update, I figured the hard reset would work, but no luck.

Any ideas? I would love your help troubleshooting,

Jeff

Sounds like the exact same issue I was having man! Only thing that fixed it was a replacement device. I'm happy to say that the replacement has been working awesome everywhere I go since I got it. I'm still using the same sim card so that wasn't the issue at all. Must have been a defective device. Have them send you a replacement!

That's great that you're working again. You wouldn't think the phone would just start doing this all of the sudden, but it may very well be the case. How did you get your phone replaced? I didn't get insurance on it and so far Samsung said I could send it to them, but Verizon nor Samsung has mentioned a replacement.

Thanks,

Jeff

Just ask Verizon for a replacement phone. That's how it worked for me.

Mine also started doing this suddenly. It worked for about a week or two then the roaming started.

Thanks. I will try that. I just swapped the SIM card at a Verizon store and lo and behold, I went from a -63dbm 1x signal to a -45dbm 1x signal. Maybe this will work.

As a side note, they must have added AWS at this location. My Speedtest today was 48mbps down and 12 mbps up during a busy lunch hour. Never got more than 15mbps in that area in the past. Glad the Note 3 has the AWS capability!

I'm pretty sure thats not AWS speeds...

This was taken with my Note 2...If I'm not mistaken AWS allows for speeds of up to 150mbps

I know that I used to be "Extended" & my phone was nothing but useless while Verizon was upgrading. Maybe that's the case...it took about 3-4 weeks until everything was good for me...In my area.

Update:
Well, the new SIM card worked for about 10 hours and then back to roaming that never stops. Signal is great everywhere else, but at home it jumps in and out of roaming and no voice signal. LTE signal stays consistent, but voice (1xrtt) jumps randomly and I can't make a call or send a text till it settles back. Frustrating when my wife's LG G2 is stable as a rock, but gets a much worse signal.

At the suggestion of a Level 2 Verizon tech, I took the phone to a Samsung Experience store inside of a Best Buy and had them do a complete flash, loading the O.S. system back on from scratch. Phone worked great until I got home and then immediately in and out of roaming. They have promised me a replacement phone if it didn't work, so waiting on a call back now. Hate to send my phone that I babied back to Verizon for a refurb, but out of options at this point.

The Note 3 is fairly new still so there's a high chance the "refurbished" device is a new device without a battery cover, S-Pen or Battery.

Yeah just look at it as a replacement instead of a refurbished phone and maybe it'll feel better. :) for what it's worth mine came in perfect condition. Not a scratch on it. Plus it works so that's good with me!

Oh man... I'm about to lose it! So today my replacement phone started roaming while I was at work...

Today was the first time I've used my Bose Soundlink Mini via Bluetooth with my replacement phone while at work. I wonder if that has any correlation with the sudden roaming issue...

Anybody else having these roaming problems also happen to use a Soundlink Mini? Or any other Bluetooth accessories?

Just a shot in the dark.

I've had this phone for a week with no issues until today. Very weird. This is similar to how my roaming issues started on my first Note 3. This is getting very frustrating!

Update on my situation. After all I have been through with new SIM cards, Factory data reset, and and O.S. re-install at Samsung store, my troubles seem to finally be over!

I received a pristine replacement phone with no battery, cover, or S-pen. To my delight it was in perfect shape and did not show any signs of wear. Had a sticker with 11-13 date behind battery. My previous phone was 9/13.

Oddly enough, my signal strength numbers on 1x and LTE are a few points lower than my old phone. The difference is they are rock solid and don't fluctuate. Knock on wood, it's been since Monday and not one episode of roaming or dropping signal. I love this phone all over again. Even asked for and received a half month's credit for my troubles. Life is once again great with my Note 3!
