I tend to be easy on phones and don't put covers on due to the added bulk. Why put covers on your furniture Grandma? Who you saving it for? Keepin it nice for the next owner??? However for the evo I found the width + depth (or lack there of) made it feel not so secure in my hand. I did not care much for the hard cases because I like something with more tack.
Initially I bought the gel case at Sprint and was reasonably happy for the 7 minutes I owned it. Just so happens I was on my way to meeting a buddy at Best Buy when I wandered into sprint. Got to Best Buy and was waiting for my bud in the phone department when I saw the rocketfish case. Best Buy had no soft cases when I bought my phone last Friday morning pre store opening. To all you best buy employees out there, nice huddle chant before you open the doors.
Back to the important stuff, I noticed the rocketfish case and decided to check it out. It looks like a hard case and is shiny but is still tacky so nice grip. I found it surprising that the gel case from sprint was super slick and not grippy and in addition a poor fit. The fit of the rocketfish is great but the silicone/rubber? material is a bit rigid for button use. Other than that it is ideal. You get the grip and shock absorption of a soft case with the fit of a hard case. Pretty impressive combo. And with the incredible abilities of this evo device there may be a need for an occasional battery swap, good luck with a hard case.
The only problem with the rocketfish is the material is a bit rigid and makes the buttons a tough press. Easily solved!! I was pretty proud of myself on this fix and felt the need to share.
So simple but very necessary with this case: there are recessed areas in the case for the on button and the volume rocker.
Get some electrical tape (key feature of electrical tape is it leaves virtually no adhesive residue) cut small strips that fit into the recessed button areas. Stack up as many layers as is necessary to achieve better button response.
My buttons actually work better now than with no case.
The sprint gel case was quickly returned and all the sprint store employees were running down to best buy for the rocketfish.
