ROM Installation Handbook

My personal favorite is TrulyEpic Rebirth. It's very simple on design and performs very well.

Sent from my Epic 4g

Thanks again. Well that sounds good to me so I will give it a go later today and let you know how it turned out.

Have a question about restoring apps and settings.
I was on stock ROM eclair DI18 and made a backup (backup1).

Let's say I flash to Xtreme Kernel DI18. Can I use backup1 to restore apps and settings, or is it useless since it is from the stock Kernel?

I flashed to Syndicate ROM (which uses Xtreme Kernel), but forgot to wipe the Davlik cache. However it appeared successful, kernel and ROM info was updated in Settings. I then reinstalled apps from scratch and made backup (backup2). Noticed that battery life was poor (before I learned about battery calibration) so I reflashed after factory resetting and wiping cache and davlik cache. Again, appeared to take. I then restored backup2. Is this ok, or should I have reinstalled apps from scratch?

I guess my questions are, after what kind of updates can you not restore apps/settings made from ClockworkMod backups? (Kernel, ROM, eclair -> froyo, Baseband version, etc...)

Kernel updates/flashes are totally independent of your system files. You can restore any backups you like if you only flashed a kernel. You probably don't even need to wipe.

Going from Eclair ROM to Eclair ROM it's usually ok to Advanced Restore>Data. Same with Froyo ROM to Froyo ROM.

Do not restore when going from Eclair ROM to Froyo ROM or vice versa. Also do not restore when going from stock to custom ROM or vice versa.

another question

when switching ROMs, it is suggested to either flash with a full battery or calibrate the battery after flashing

does the same apply for flashing kernels?

Try and flash your ROM when your battery is full. If you don't, you may need to calibrate it afterwards if you notice it being very inaccurate. Kernel flashing has no effect on battery meter readings.

thanks for the guide. i flashed a rom with no issues. only too a few minutes. could not have been any easier

today I went from DK28 to DI18 to EB13 to Rooted EB13/EXT4 all in the blink of an eye...immaculate instructions & no issues...lovin life on ACE ROM v1.7....Thanks so much gents!

im sorry this is super late from ur guys last post on this tread. im new (noob) to android and want to try a root and add a rom to my epic. i got the OTA update for the offical froyo, will ur steps still work in my case? can someone help please.

thanks in advance.

what about if im using a pre rooted version of EC05
If your using a prerooted version of EC05 then flashing a ROM is simple depending on which prerooted EC05 your using.

If you boot into CWM (shut down device completely then press and hold Volume Down+Camera+Power) what color is the text in CWM?

Green= CWM 2.5.1.0, which means you will need to convert to EXT4 to flash and run most custom ROMS

Orange= CWM 3.0.0.6 which in this case all you need to do is below.

Download and place a ROM of choice on your sdcard card.

Boot into CWM,

Wipe the following 3x each:

Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe cache partition
Advanced>Wipe Dalvik Cache

Install zip from sdcard>choose zip from sdcard>(LOCATE THE ROM ZIP)

Either the ROM will automatically reboot for you or return you to the menu which you then just have to GO BACK to the main screen and Reboot the System.

Sit back and give it a few minutes to boot up and enjoy.
