[ROM][KERNEL][09.28.11] GeeWiz 1.1.1 ED05 TouchWiz Debloated

OK, can the GeeWiz 1.1.1 PATCH - be applied just to a stock Verizon Rooted rom. I like to make a CWM restore points at several levels, just in case I need to do a restore while out in the field. I have tried this on a replacement Fascinate I just received and can not seem to get the patch to take on the stock rooted rom. I would like to have a couple of the launchers not show up in the task manager, then I am going to re-install GeeWiz and make another restore point on my sd card. Thanks.

ROM updated to v1.1.1 via a CWM-flashable patch file. Nothing Earth-shattering, just making good on the promise to hide the most popular launchers from the Task Manager and update the core applications to the latest revisions while I was in there.

Download link to 1.1.1 PATCH in the first post, if anyone's still interested :D

The quick answer is no.

The main dilemma you're up against with a stock ROM is that it's "odexed", for most of the .APK files you have you actually have 2 files ... an APK file and an ODEX file. You'd at minimum need to remove the .ODEX files for anything that was changed, flash the update, then clear the Dalvik-Cache before rebooting the device.

While I cannot guarantee success, what you would need to do for what I believe you want would be to:

- Rename, move or delete "JobManager.apk" and "JobManager.odex" from /system/app
- Put the 1.1.1 update JobManager.apk into /system/app
- set the permissions for the new JobManager.apk to 0644 (chmod 0644 /system/app/JobManager.apk)
- clear the Dalvik cache with CWM
- cross your fingers

The JobManager mod isn't all that different from stock, but things can get a little weird on you still. When building out a ROM, the changes are usually interdependent. What I mean by this is that I've made changes to the Android "framework" files, which the apps (APKs, like JobManager) are then recompiled against. If the app happened to reference something that was changed in the framework, it will likely Force Close on you if you didn't also update that framework. It's somewhat of a crap shoot.

It might work, it might not, but I'm leaning more towards "will", if you just replace the stock JobManager.apk with the modded one and clear out your Dalvik cache before rebooting. The update-zip for 1.1.1 is not a good idea against a different ROM under pretty much any and all circumstances

Just wondering if you know any LED notification that will work with your ROM. Like BLN

You would actually need to use a different Kernel rather than a different ROM to get BLN or BLN-like things to work. My Kernel unfortunately doesn't support that, it would have required me to swap out the touchscreen driver, which was a little beyond the scope of what I was trying to accomplish :(

There is no real dependency between the ROM and Kernel, you should be able to just swap the kernel out and keep using the ROM if you'd like to, and get the best of both worlds!!

Hey guys, sorry I've been seemingly ignoring this forum. I have been working on GeeWiz Gingerbread and maintaining the status/updates at XDA only (no specific reason for that other than my own laziness to post it over here!). I finally released a non-beta version of that and intend to post it here as soon as I can complete some documentation that is lacking, which I may be able to do this weekend. I prefer to have all my ducks in a row for you guys, I want to give you the best quality information/stuff that I can!

GeeWiz Froyo is still alive, I just haven't had anything new to post since 1.1.1. I fully intend to release a v1.2 with some of the new things I made for GB back-ported. I've personally switched to the GB version on my "real" phone, even though it's not quite as stable or 'complete' as this Froyo version, so it's to be expected that GB will likely receive the most attention :'(

But ... GeeWiz 1 is not dead, if you guys have any questions/problems/requests please do let me know, I will try to do better checking on both forums

Thanks to everyone that has used GeeWiz and all the great feedback I've received so far! It's been my pleasure sharing my little hobby with y'all :D

using no-led for now thanks for the info

i tried your 2.1 and so far so good. I was crossing my fingers on the data issues good thing it worked. Great job !!!

I'm currently putting all my apps back on my phone after running GeeWhiz 2.1 for a while and having lots of random reboots, regardless of kernel or settings or anything. But love 1.1.1. It's the most stable custom ROM I've ever used.

So far no FC. only thing i noticed is that i am not getting the notification updates for facebook. Also added the accurate battery MOD but i need to ODIN CWM cause the built-in recovery wont install the zip.

edit: uninstalled facebook and reinstalled it fixed the notification problem.

Hello,

I just installed this ROM with update but I'm sad to see that it does not include Thinkfree. I tried getting it from the market but only the lite version is avalable for free (which will not open pdf files). However, it used to be included with my stock rom. I have another stock fascinate avalable which is my son's. Is there a way to "rip" the app from another phone or rom or is there a patch for this app available?

Thanks :'(

If you have that other phone rooted, you can use root explorer to go into the system/appear folder and snag the think free apk. If not, you can find a rom to download and extract the apk from the same folder. After that, just put the apk on your as card and install like any other app.

Ok, on the part of extracting the .apk file from a ROM... How to you extract anything from a ROM? I removed the .md5 extention from a ROM I downloaded and left it as .tar but then the files within the archive are .bin, .rfs and a zImage file. Now what?

You can install the apk linked above, but always be careful that it's legit before you do. The easiset way to extract it is to find a stock ROM that can be flashed in CWM. That way, all the apks are contained in the zip and can be easily extracted with 7-zip. There are also some ROMs that made Thinkfree a flashable zip. It will work with any ROM.

I've been running this for a week now, added a custom boot animation, no problems at all with this ROM. Better battery life, better sound with music and calls are clear and volume is good. Trying to talk my wife into letting me root/rom her fassy now that she has seen mine run so well this past week.

Question...I've been trying to read and learn as much as I can about ROMS and themes, etc. From what I can tell, I can't run a theme (like one of the 2.2 ED05 Powerwashed Themes) over this ROM, is that correct? Thanks for any info/advice anyone cares to offer.

Typically speaking, themes need to be built for particular ROMS to account for each particular tweak in the rom. I'm not into theming all that much, so I'm not sure if there are any specifically for GeeWiz.

Thanks...kinda what I figured, just wasn't 100% sure. I'm happy to have things running smooth, the ROM is stable, I'm not looking to mess any of that up. But I am a sucker for having a nice, uniform look and feel, including the notification bar/pull down that you can get using themes. Oh well, not a big deal.

I tried to add some mods on this rom/kernel and things started to lag so bad that i need to reinstall everything. Just my experience, same thing happened with his gingerbread version 2.1

I am running his Gingerbread version and things are looking good.

Yep, I noticed even changing my LPP themes/icons made this ROM a little glitchy at first. After a few reboots, everything seems ok, although I found one set of icons that this ROM would not even recognize for some reason.

I'd be interested in giving the GB version a run at some point. I've been monitoring everyone's comments on that one, seems right now there are still a few too many issues (minor) for my taste/patience.
