Rom Manager And Droid X

I don't know anything about roms other than they make your phone look nice and maybe faster.

ANYWAY

After a 1-click root of my Droid X (which worked because I installed Wifi Tether and it works great) My next thing was to put a custom rom on my phone.
So, after reading from a few sources I decided to download Rom Manager and just go ahead and pay for the premium.

I open it.
Click "Flash Clockwork Mod Recovery"
Pick my Phone (Droid X)
Then scroll down to Download ROM
Select a rom
select back up
It starts to download and then restarts
well, during the restart it appears to being to unpack something
Then it shows a Exclamation Mark with a little green android
And just starts my Droid X as normal.
NOthing has changed.

Obviously I'm doing something wrong.
Can I get step by step instructions?
I'm not a developer, I don't want to be one, I just want a nice looking ROM and some speed on my Droid X.

you also have to get the Droid X Recovery Bootstrap App as well. To flash anything on the phone, first go into the bootstrapper and press "Bootstrap Recovery", then you can go into ROM Manager and flash whatever you want. you have to re-bootstrap every time before flashing though

I have the same problem. I've followed instructions to the tee, including those here:

Over and over again, I get the Android with the exclamation point and it looks like something starts to unpack, but then it boots up as normal.

Yeah I also have that, I have to use the bootstrapper to go into recovery.

Iwish someone could be clear and concise about how it works. ...sounds like Rom manager doesn't work like it should.....boo

I can flash roms just not through Rom Manager.
I go tot he bootstrapper app, and boot up in recovery mode.
