Hi guys,

I want to add a flash rom to my evo, im a little nervous about it and want to ask a question first

1. First, I did the root (successfully, I believe) , but do I also need to unlock the bootloader too? I already added twrp to my sd card but havent opened it yet.

Thanks

Yes. In order to flash a ROM you will need to unlock the phone. After you unlock the phone, add the TWRP recovery. From there you can flash ROMs and mods. Good luck and have fun.

Hey, where or how do I find the bootloader

Power off. Then press Volume Down and Power. When the buttons blink, lift your finger off Power and then press down again. The bootloader should come up.

I used the method that you download drivers and do it through your computer. Later I saw a video online where they rooted through the bootloader. But since I was able to download and use rooted apps I figured that it was ok, but I see other how-to's that say unlock the bootloader, then root, then flash ROM..so I figure that that I would ask before I did another thing..lol :)

Tony C,

That was the very article that I read that prompted me to ask the question about the bootloader, because the way I rooted didnt say anything about the bootloader.

Yeah, rooting is just the first step of the whole process, if your goal is to flash custom ROMs. Rooting just give you full access to things that are typically locked down. When you unlock the bootloader, that allows you to install a custom recovery, like TWRP. With a custom recovery you can easily flash custom ROMs and/or Kernels. Some people are happy with the stock ROM and don't want to flash ROMs but want root access so they can install custom apps, like wireless tether or titanium backup.

Cloak n dagger

I do have both of those apps and they're working, so considering I'm a newbie what could I use a flash Rom for

You need 3 things to flash ROMs - 1. Root (which I gather you already have), 2. custom recovery (TWRP), and 3. unlocked bootloader or s-off

Do you have TWRP installed, and have you unlocked the bootloader?

Also, I can't emphasize enough that you need to read, do some research, read some more, and when you think you're done reading, read a little bit more before you march off into the weeds with flashing things. Don't get me wrong, it's a safe and easy process, but there are pitfalls. Spend some time reading through the threads at XDA in the HTC EVO 4G LTE section. Look through the EVO 4G LTE Android Development and Original Android Development subsections. Here's a sticky in Android Development that may be a good starting point for you.
Also, check out some of the threads at Android Forums in the All Things Root subforum.

And if you have questions, post up here and we'll do our best to point you in the right direction.

Thank you so much..I've spent the entire past weekend reading, reading, reading and viewing videos etc..and just when I think I'm ready to do something..the. I read again and get nervous then stop and ask a question.

GOOD!!! Read Read Read, my friend. Any Decent member will not bash you for asking a question about something you don't understand. What you're doing can have consequences, so it's good that you are reading up. There's no rush to root, but if you rush, you may be shelling out 200 for a new phone. Doing your homework and learning as much as you can is the best way to prevent that.

I downloaded the latest OTA and lost root. How can I revert back?

I only want root to do app backups. No custom roms. I used zedomax's method to root and that was it. Am I totally screwed now?

Sorry for being completely ignorant. Which OTA thread? Also, I tried using the RUU from before the OTA, but it said that I cannot revert back.

Should have been more specific. The PSA don't take the update if you are rooted thread where you asked the same question. Here's what I said there:

What was your configuration before you took the OTA? I'm assuming rooted/locked/stock recovery since it installed. In that case, you're pretty much screwed until someone develops a new root method, or until someone way smarter than me figures out how to crack the new bootloader so you can revert.
The previous build was rooted fairly quickly, so I don't think it will be long (famous last words....).
