Root to Tether

Has anyone able to get wifi tether to work on the bionic yet and if so which version did you use?

I am using the OTA Touch Wiz update and it works for me. Put SGT into airplane mode, turn on bluetooth, pair the devices, go into bluetooth settings in SGT, click the wrench icon and select option to tether...

Went through the steps above, but there's no option to tether when I click on the wrench icon.
I'm trying to pair it with an HTC Incredible. Maybe that's the reason.

I would just like to say that the "any other LTE device" part of your statement is wrong. I do not tether much, but was forced to recently and it worked fine with my Charge

Are you sure it was going over LTE and not 3G and you are doing this via Wireless (as Hotspot)?

Anyways, that wasn't my statement, I was quoting (and linked the quote) the creator of the NVRAM edit that was developed and released by TBH

I am completely new to all of this, so please forgive any naivety. I'm looking for a 4g smartphone through verizon that will have a hotspot- previously I used a broadband, but this option seems cheaper & I would get internet on my phone too. Charge is that aforementioned $30, which I am willing to pay- but what really bothers me is that I would only get 2GB a month- not unlimited! Is there a way to increase this to unlimited so I don't get charged major fees if I end up using 3 or 4 GB? Also- I'm trying to decide what phone to get & was waiting for the bionic to come out- what's the verdict?

If you are new to Verizon, or just now wanting to upgrade now to a 3G or 4G smartphone with Verizon, there is no unlimited data plan offered (publicly)..

You needed to have the unlimited plan back in June before Verizon dropped it to be grandfathered..

Perhaps in the future, due to competition pressure, Verizon will bring the unlimited data plan back..

PdaNet should work (USB Tethering and Bluetooth), as it worked on my Incredible 2 and my updated Droid X. The Wi-Fi hotspot seems to have been blocked back with the latest updates on most of Verizon's updated.

Thanks for the info- not new to verizon, but new to smartphones- actually trying to figure out which is the best- any input?
Also, if I pay the $30 mo. for 2GB through my future 4G phone & use its hotspot for my laptop, how else is the unlimited plan offered (besides publicly) in case I go over?

Sorry if this was already suggested, but I didn't have time to read the entire thread. At any rate, I think the biggest problem with all of the carriers' tethering plans is that it only accommodates two types of users: those who don't tether at all, and those who need to tether all the time. What about the person who only wants to tether off and on? Or someone who only needs a small amount of data? $20-30 per month for tethering is not reasonable for this type of person. Sure, you can add/remove the tethering plan and pay the pro-rated amount, but this is inconvenient and very difficult to keep track of.

They've shown great desire to tier the main data plan, but the tethering plans are really what need to be tiered. How about $5/mo for 200mb, $10/mo for 1GB, $20/mo for 2GB, or $30/mo for Unlimited? At it stands, I'm sure a large number of people just don't subscribe to tethering at all, whereas they might go for it if they could get a smaller plan for $5-10/mo.

if you wanted hotspot, it would be $50 per month:

$30 data - 2GB (for the phone)
$20 Hotspot - 2GB

Total 4GB - apparently, Verizon doesn't care if you use all 4GB for Hotspot or all for phone (or any other mix between the two for the 4GB).

There may be some corporate unlimited options, there are no unlimited data or unlimited hotspot retail plans at this time.

Maybe it's just me, but I can't imagine an option with anything less than 2GB which they have now for the Hotspot option... is the $20 reasonable? there's the debate - $30 for unlimited is better.. I feel $15 for tether/hotspot feature on top of your data plan would be reasonable (and stick to the top 5% rules???).......

I usually add and drop as needed. To add you can do it from your browser after you open it for the 1st time. To drop, you have to call cust service or login to your account online and remove from your features. I also just downloaded an app from the Amazon app store called easy tether (not a plug) speedtest results were 25 mbps down and 5 mbps up in a 4g area of course.

PdaNet is OK as an emgency, but unless you get the paid version, you can't get on any site that requires a login...that even includes this one.

We really need a functioning tethering app. For all of you that think tethering is wrong, stop reading this thread!

I hope they find an app that will bypass anything Verizon has done to block it...I would like to use some tethering sometime soon. It's very helpful in a pinch when I need to grab things for my computer when I'm at school or on the road. I already stated before, but I was at a conference and my friend was a lifesaver with his rooted X and my other friend's rooted Incredible when we were able to tether off his phone. I agree with everyone that there should be a tiered data of some sort for tethering...but what about pay per use? I mean, a basic phone can pay per use, like $0.10 per MB or something...why not $5 per GB used during tethering and just track it through the built in hotspot. Then those who use it more often can get a plan, and make the plans cheaper. $10 for like 3GB, $20 for 6GB, and so on. Verizon would make more money off of tethering plans than ever if they did that. I'd certainly pay an extra $5 one month if I needed tethering that month, but let's face it...I won't need it very often.

Can we please get back to what the OP was asking? I don't care about if it's morally okay by anyone's standards, I just care that I think it's fine to do, and that's where it's going to stay. Now I'm interested just like the OP...I want to see tethering 4G on the Bionic. I know my friend used to tether on his Droid X, but the Gingerbread update took that away, it doesn't work anymore. So does anyone have any info on them fixing the app so it works?

I can confirm tethering was still working on my DX with gingerbread before I upgraded to DB. You need to upgrade the tethering app with a patch and it works like a charm. Do a search on google and different forums and I'm sure you'll find it.

enjoy.
