Root to Tether

I was checking on xda. It seems that none of the free tethering apps are working. Might have to keep my iPhone "Jailbroken" Tethering was one of my reasons for grabbing the Bionic.

I saw that thread too, and like I said there, give it time. If they don't completely crack down on rooted tethering, a new app will come up. This restriction is probably a culmination of seeing Barnacle and Wifi Tether so successful. I say give it a week or two.

Your right, it IS a service they offer. However charging me an additional fee to use my UNLIMITED DATA on a tethered device is completed horse crap. And honestly? I would encourage people to "steal this service." Maybe if enough people jump on the band wagon they will finally realize what total nonsense it is and start offering it for free instead of trying to get our money at every turn. Cell phone plans are already outrageously over priced... they don't need to screw us every chance they get.

I don't know about everyone else, but typically I liked to get kissed before I get effed. :p

I agree.

its like saying, you can use FiberOptic cable internet on your PC but have to play extra to hook it up to Playstation 3.

it is an absolute bs. idk how there is no consumer laws that prevents corporation from charging you twice for something you own...

well tether works for me and i use the google wireless tether from well google.

Lawers pay to tether, congress would rather root to tether free! Lolz, I am joking ha!

Regardless of the reason someone chooses to "root" or "jailbreak" or whatever you want to call it depending on the device, it's legal. Now, what you do with that "legality" is up to you. Root away!

Can we please get back to what the OP was asking? I don't care about if it's morally okay by anyone's standards, I just care that I think it's fine to do, and that's where it's going to stay. Now I'm interested just like the OP...I want to see tethering 4G on the Bionic. I know my friend used to tether on his Droid X, but the Gingerbread update took that away, it doesn't work anymore. So does anyone have any info on them fixing the app so it works?

Chances are we'll have a better idea this weekend or next week.

KillerG I know my D2 works fine with Barnacle after the GB update as well as CM7 nightlies, if that helps at all. I know DX has CM7 and should have it for the GB OTA by now.

I'm tethering now. I always will tether. If they charge me or block me I'll sue the **** out of them. I pay $171/mo for two phones (wife and I) with unlimited data on both. $30 "EXTRA" each. I think BIG RED knows they cant charge me 3 times for the same internet. Twice is enough!!! I'm willing to pay that. Show me one, JUST ONE case where they actually charged a customer or dropped their service. I challenge all of you to find me solid proof that they are doing anything about it. Asking google to restrict access in the market to wireless tether doesn't count. As you can see I can still use it. For real people, you can find wireless tether in umpteen different places across the internet. The easiest way is to type Wireless Tether.apk into the good old GOOGLE search bar. You know, the guys that blocked it from the GOOGLE market?! Again, Verizon knows they cant actually shut our service off or illegally charge us more for something we already paid for. So tether your little torrentz off guys. I'll let you know if the feds show up at my door. HACK THE PLANET! HACK THE PLANET!

Sent from my "FOR REAL" Firefox 6.0 web browser while unethically tethering with my (rooted, overclocked, Android 2.2 "I'll never update" Bad Ass) Droid X!

why does tether work on HTC phones but not Moto. do moto phones have the capability of hacking the DUN info? i was always curious as to why my tether has always worked and my buddies X quit after GB.

First post here, getting the Droid Bionic and this is an interesting topic to me.

I wonder if the major carriers have ever pondered something like a "small" fee to add tethering, something like $5. If they made tethering using my unlimited data plan something very reasonable I would gladly pay this to be able to "legally" do it. As many people here have stated though, I feel that a company should be there to support its customers, and double charging for data is not doing that.

Anyway, getting back to the OP, I am also VERY interested if tethering on a rooted Bionic is going to be possible.

Thanks all! Looking forward to getting in on the community more as soon as I have my Bionic tomorrow morning.

What do you think the repercussions could be for tethering without permission? Sprint cancels contracts just for data roaming (which is a good way to get off a contract BTW =D). It's rather easy to detect packets from a tethered device.

look verizon requires you to pay for a data plan to even have the phone so if you have a 29.95 unlimited data plan like i do i think you should be able to use it any way you wont after all there making you buy it anyway. ps i love wi fi teather and have got a thunderbolt and love it and if they have figured a way to block it then someone on here will figure a way to go around it so thank you smart people for doing this for us not so smart ones

I saw on Droid life that there was a radio hack to get WiFi Tether to work on a Droid X. Maybe the same thing could be used for a Bionic.

So far, I am not rooted, but have successfully tethered the Bionic to my Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 via bluetooth. This method works flawlessly without root and that is the only thing that I typically would tether to anyway...

Wow. How do you tether via Bluetooth? I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, and would like to do the same.

Sweet. Gonna definitely give this a shot.

Edit: I think I've done everything correctly. They are connected to each other, and everything seems to be doing what it should be, but I can't get the browser to actually work.
