Root to Tether

Read the posts from cellzealot in that thread please. I don't think the OP really understands what he's doing so err on the side of caution if you plan to use the method and remember that there's zero guarantee that you won't be caught and forced into a contract change as a result.

You know, I really want tethering back. I have a series of processes that depend on it that i've just stopped doing for now. But I don't like the smell of this hack. Wi-Fi Tether and Barnacle were programs that I used to take advantage of the data I had already purchased. But I really don't want to "trick" the verizon app into providing the access. I particularly don't want to jeopardize my unlimited data plan.

So I think I'm going to pass on this one, at least for now. I'm hoping to get wireless tether back, but i did notice one thing. Whenever i started that app, the Verizon hotspot configuration app started too. I'm wondering if it is actively blocking wireless tether,.

Your right, it IS a service they offer. However charging me an additional fee to use my UNLIMITED DATA on a tethered device is completed horse crap. And honestly? I would encourage people to "steal this service." Maybe if enough people jump on the band wagon they will finally realize what total nonsense it is and start offering it for free instead of trying to get our money at every turn. Cell phone plans are already outrageously over priced... they don't need to screw us every chance they get.

I don't know about everyone else, but typically I liked to get kissed before I get effed. :p

Sing it, Before Big Red ate up Alltel my data plan came with free tethering. Oh yeah it was still UNLIMITED oh and wait it was 3 bucks cheaper.

People that say it is steal are confused. Paying for tethering is like the water company telling you that you can only use you water inside your house. If you use it to water your grass of let your kinds have some fun you'll be fined.

Our water utility actually does restrict us for outside lawn use.. odd days of week except Friday where no one can water lawns/gardens etc... Actual the city is the Utility.

Fines are hefty if you get caught.

So I'm really confused by all this. There is a tether option in my phone settings for USB and BT so I decided to play around with it so I know how to tether to a computer if I needed to. I set it up based on the directions in the phone and everything worked very well. I got fast speeds over USB and my phone charged from my laptop. This got me wondering. At no time during the setup did it EVER tell me that I would have to pay for this. I was expecting some sort of warning that I'm about to add $20 to my bill FOREVER until I realize I'm paying it. Plus, I couldn't find a way to track my data usage since it didn't register on the built in data, and it didn't tell me how much it would be once I went over the limit( that it never told me I had or gave me a way to monitor). I haven't gotten a text or email or anything telling me that I added this to my account. My daughter could do this at any time and I would have no way of knowing until I got a bill that I rarely study in the first place. I've heard all those horror stories of 16 thousand dollar phone bills and this got me worried about my bills.

So, I went in to the VZ store and asked. They told me they didn't see my tether on their system (probably cause it was only 20 minutes ago and I hardly used any data at all). They told me about the $20 tether bill I would get for the rest of my life and that my limit was 2GB which I could go through in 15 minutes at the speeds I get on 4G. OMG! seriously this doesn't sound legal and I think I will have to go see my congresswoman...

What the hell is wrong with this company???

I will wait until people confirm they are not being charged for tethering on their next bill. Too many people at XDA are questioning this method.

I had free wifi tethering on my DX for a year and never had an issue. With that being said, the Droid Bionic is a new device and this isn't something I want to jump into. I'll wait for testers to confirm this works.

Ditto!!!

It's just waaayyyyy to easy to detect. Your Phone's Identity and the usage is being stored/sent to big red. All they would have to do is change their billiing to utilize that data. It's not like you can say you didn't do it.

Still it would be hard for them to just charge you for a service. It would be to easy for people to say I didn't know or what not. I could see them telling you that you will be charged and then you have to confirm that. Hell I could blame it on the cat walking on the computer and the phone or something. LOL

I'm not willing to risk my unlimited Data Plan for that. I've had this phone since release and have already racked up over 4Gig in downloads. I'm not gonna rock the boat.

FWIW, I rooted and used the wireless tether hack, as mentioned in the link from XDA (post #59). I called VZW and removed the paid hotspot feature, then set it up on the phone and it worked fine. Since I'm grandfathered on an unlimited plan, it shouldn't matter how much data I use - but time will tell and I'll hope for the best. If it becomes a problem, I'll add the hotspot feature and monitor usage.

does it say anywhere im the contract that we are not allowed to tether?

i think it's just a feature that the carriers want to be stingy about and charge extra for.,

i never had a problem with sprint and my evo. but sprtint doesn't force the issue. unlike verizon who seems to want to control our every move with money.

they are, after all, the most expensive carrier in the world. while offering the least amount of services.

quite frankly. i can see the needs of a traveling man need the best coverage they can get. but for all you people that never leave your home city. there are 3 other carriers that offer much more for much less. why pay $200 for nothing when you can get everything for $80. UNLIMITED. AND, your phone isn't controlled.

I have had sprint, AT&T, and Verizon. Sprint dropped calls all the time and has no service at my parents house. AT&T has a few very large areas near my office where no service is available. Verizon has only 2 spots i have found with no coverage, and they are about 20 feet wide.

you get what you pay for.

around here. i've had the best luck with sprint.

my only problem is. i'm a traveling man and verizon has the better 3g coverage. other than that. they are a flat our rip off. course, with all the money everyone wants to dish out. they better have the better coverage.

I used to use PDA.net and it worked great with my inlimited plan for tethering. I was never charged extra for it. The only one you get charged for is hotspot since it is wifi and does more than one unit at a time.

I have an Ipad 2 for work that I would like to use on the Internet. PDA net is not an option, since it only can support WiFi. That would be the only reason I would want this functionality.
