Root Verizon HTC One M8 Running Lollipop?

Hi, I have a Verizon HTC One M8 running Lollipop. I accidentally deleted a very important text thread (SMS) that I am trying to recover. Unfortunately, it wasn't backed up in the cloud. I've tried a few types of online software (Kingroot, Kingo, Dr. Fone) without success. Most of what I've read says it's pretty hard to root newer Verizon HTC phones running Lollipop, but I can't give up. Has anyone had any success rooting in this situation? Or at least unlocking it, so it can be rooted? Thanks!

Have you tried flashing TWRP with Odin? It was very easy for me that way, although I have an unlocked S5 so naturally it is easier to root.
