ok first stupid question. i just bought a rooted HTC 4G rom and all that stuff. and im way over my head to begin with. but will i have an issue activating it?

it is not activated. i have Rooted Synergy RC2 ROM (Android 2.3.3 with Sense 3.0 Themes) and have NO idea what im doing. lol

considering you have rooted, and installed a custom ROM, I would think the next thing, is to contact your provider and have them activate your phone, so you may begin to use it. Without knowing anything else, this is what people will suggest to you.

I am sure you have read all the "stickies" concerning what the benefits are to installing a custom ROM, and Rooting, So most will not rehash that.

If your phone will not connect to your provider, then you need to "activate" it. Usually, I suspect a quick call to your provider will fix this.

There is the thread for Synergy ROM over at XDA. Like Moscow and Matoya said, just go ahead and call Sprint to activate the phone. You can even do it over the internet via Chat with a representative with the serial numbers of the phone.

That is the root thread here on the forums, you'll find useful information for any of the rooting questions you might have. If you have anything specific feel free to let us know and we'll try and help you out :)

Simply put, a branded unrooted phone restricts you to whatever the provider decides it wants to give you. usually crappy apps you sometimes can't uninstall, sucking down battery life for example. Also, you can't install certain apps that need root access (the locked away files the provider doesn't want you messing with). Like taking screen captures for example, although I hear there are 1 or 2 that can. Anyhow, you're stuck with what they give you.

Also, a rooted phone, allows you to completely install an entire new system, skins, launchers, etc. One benefit, is usually, you get extended battery life and faster performance as you've cleaned out all the branded crap, and installed a leaner system.

Also, you can run such apps as SetCpu, to over and under clock the processor, allowing you to extend your battery life even further.

These are just a sampling of things.

thanks I have a better understanding now. Cant wait to play

well i actually had issues activating the phone. but the guys at the sprint store are super cool and it was an issues with the synergy. he reinstalled synergy and all was good.

Glad you got it activated!!

One of the things you should do, is read some of the guides on this site, concerning roots and custom ROMs. They will give you a very good understanding in general terms. Considering you are running a custom ROM, you need to know how to reflash it, in case something goes wrong, and precautions to take before doing so.

Rule number 1 with a custom ROM. When your phone is working good after installing a ROM, do a nand backup through recovery. Reason, if you mess things up later on, you can reflash the recovery image.

Also, check out the site that developed your ROM. You'll be able to know when they are releasing a newer version, and you can check to see if they fixed any bugs or added any new features.

As always, when you have an issue, don't hesitate to ask for help. And if you have any doubts about doing something drastic, ask first before doing it. ;)

so to do that i need to into bootlog?

2 ways you can do this.

1. Reboot your device into recovery, and create the recovery backup from there.
2. Through the RomManager program

Either way will work, but I prefer through Recovery for some reason.

Regardless, it will create the backup file to your SD card.

Note that this will not save your apps. You'll need Titanium backup for that, as an example. Also note, you will lose contacts and such, so best to synch them to a PC or Google.

oh yeah i have the titanuim back up to

Just remember, if you're going to install a different ROM, only back up the apps. If you try to restore backed up system files to a different rom...... Woooohooooo.... boot loop
