My TBolt is rooted, running BAMF 1.09 and has the grandfathered unlimited data plan, but no tether plan (mobile hotspot). If I run Barnacle Wifi Thether and connect to my laptop, is there any way that VZW can tell I'm doing it? Is there a difference that they can see between surfing the internet from my TBolt vs. from my computer through the TBolt?

BTW, I'm trying Barancle Wifi Tether.

My understanding is, yes, they can tell.
But, not that I would know.... :-X ..if you just use if rarely, they will never care. For now.

They can tell by your data usage. Having an unlimited plan was never really totally unlimited, if you used more than 5gbs of data you were penalised. Which 5gbs on a 3G data signal was really hoggin ! I tether in small doses .

I think the real answer is that yes, they can tell, but usually won't bother to check if your data usage doesn't raise any red flags.

Having said that....

There are a lot of folks here that use the "free" tether apps on rooted phones that have never suffered any consequence, which is all well and good, but do be aware that it does go against Verizon's TOS, so do run the risk of having them lay the hammer down on you.

4G data isn't touched (yet). I am well over 20gb this month, no penalization on 4G. 3G is "network optimized" though, not an issue for me since 99% of the time, i am in a 4G area.

There is no throttling or limit on 4G devices. Doesn't matter what kind of connection your 4G device uses (i.e. 1x, 3G, 4G).

Interesting, didn't know that, just assumed that 3G was network optimized for the tb, since my 3G speeds were usually so bad.

Verizon stated this policy a while back. You'll find reference to this in the forums if you do a search (I didn't feel like tracking down the old threads :) ). Was much talked about. The key item being "4G Device" dependant. Connection speed was not a factor.

thanks for the clarification. i found it on Verizon's website, and you are correct. Interesting though, I guess that means that the 3G network is sometimes running really slow and i'm not being "optimized". i'm assuming though that at some point in the future, they will add 4G phones to the list.

They say they won't (nothing is "promised for sure", but...). I believe them. Ninety-nine percent of the current 3G users have unlimited data. Not so with 4G users. Not since they implemented the Tiered plans. 3G still has literally tons of legacy users, accounting for that 99 percent (my guess). 4G users are much newer without any real legacy user base 'cep for some early adopter's unlimited plans (Yay unlimited!). Anyway, since almost all 4G is metered (Tiered) I don't see any reason for actual user throttling to ever occur.
