rooted sch968c, now I want lollipop

(1) make sure you have custom recovery (cwm or twrp)
(2) create nandroid backup in custom recovery. This allows you to easily restore phone.
(3) download ROM compatible with your S3 variant on PC.
(4) download appropriate gapps file for specific Android version on PC.
(5) move ROM and gapps files to S3.
(6) wipe data, cache, davlik cache from custom recovery.
(7) install ROM and gapps in custom recovery, then reboot after.

If you do a full backup, then restore it, you'll be back on the ROM you're on. Do a data backup. (On TWRP, uncheck System. Cache should already be unchecked.) Then flash the ROM you want (make sure it's for your model - i337, or something like that - for your carrier and country. Then install CWM or TWRP again if the new ROM wiped it off (don't mix - if you did the backup on TWRP, reinstall TWRP - TWRP can't read CWM's backups and CWM can't read TWRP's backups) and restore the data backup.

In the future, if you're going to do anything that might mess the phone up (even installing a questionable app), make a data backup. If the worst happens, flash the ROM, then restore the backup, and all you've lost is about 15 minutes.

BTW, to flash Samsung ROMs, read our [Samsung] How to flash Stock ROM via ODIN guide.
