Rooting a Visual Land tablet, same as MOMO9?

I have a Visual Land Prestige 7 tablet I'd like to root. Elsewhere on this site it says to ask here about tablets not on the list there.

Someone on this forum wrote that it is the same as a MOMO9, and that there is an Android 4.0.1 ICS firmware for it. I found that file, but I'm not sure how to use it.

Also, I'd like some confirmation that this firmware will work on this tablet.

The tablet does not seem to read anything from its USB port, part of the reason I want to root it, plus other strange things.

So how can I use this firmware file? If I download it directly to the tablet, can I just double-click it and it'll install, or what? And am I correct in assuming this file will automatically root the machine?

I've never rooted anything, so I am unfamiliar with the process. I've read up on it a bit, but this post I saw seemed to indicate this file was all I needed.

Any help would be appreciated.

Then Towel Root should root it.

You use the program that the manufacturer supplies - which usually doesn't exist for these cheap Chinese devices - to flash the firmware.

Firmware written to run on a particular device will run on that device. There's no "universal Android 4.0.1" firmware.

That's usually a hardware problem and you can't fix hardware by rooting.

More like "what". You have to restart the tablet in download mode, then run the program that flashes the firmware to it on a PC, with the tablet connected to the PC.

If it's a stock firmware, no. If it's one redone by a developer, almost certainly yes.

It wrong. Unless the kernel was patched (after June 2014 - check the kernel date in Settings/General/About device), Towel Root should root it. Flashing rooted firmware will also root it - since the firmware is rooted - (you root the firmware, not the tablet), but if you flash the wrong firmware you could end up with a $50 door stop.

Any help would be appreciated.
I'd say replace it. $59 isn't worth the work and risk. (Walmart, Target, Amazon - search visual land prestige 7. According to all the ads, it comes with Android 4.1.)

Thanks for your comprehensive reply! However, I'm a little confused (nothing new). You said there's no universal Android 4.0.1 firmware, but then said, 'Towel Root should root it.' Is that because one of Towel Root's specific targets is this device, or just that it's as close to universal as I'm going to find, or what?

Update: I've tried Towel Root a few times, using the different settings. No luck yet. It says that if the Android reboots, then it failed. What happens when it works?

On my attempts so far, it did reboot. I'll keep trying different combinations.

Thanks again.
