Rooting for Eclair and leaked Froyo DK28

If this thing really gives you root access, then you've got the procedure down. Just make sure to backup using Clockwork before you flash anything.

As for using ROM Manager to download Epic Experience, that won't work as there are currently no ROMs available for download that way. You'll need to go to XDA on your phone and clic the download link.

Make sure to check back in with us and give your review of that rooting app!

Hmmm. Tried it 3 times. Never seemed to do anything so I'd do a battery pull. Run rom manager and it would say I'm not rooted so I'd try again. Will wait to hear from dev.

go download super user from the market.

That's a vital part until you flash roms as it is usually included.
Without it you can't grant anything super user permission.
And you definitely can't flash a rom until you flash clockwork recovery.

Honestly you should just do the one clcik method and follow the directions. It's very easy as rag has spent some time including everything for noobs

From what I understand this z4 app was to install super user... it's a complete one click- that just doesn't seem to work on my epic but every other Galaxy S! Frustrating.

I keep reading the noob one click threads- still not my cup of tea.

Being a easy root user I would only go one click root as im afraid of bricking my phone. I tried one click root from the computer and failed. Tried visonary and failed. Tried z4root and the app just ran with no results. Rebooted and tried again and it finshed, rebooted my phone and now my good ole superuser app is back. Can't believe it worked. Also has the unroot option as well. Running fine on the droid x. Finally something worked.

Wahoo! I wondered what may be conflicting and decided to use home switcher to go to STOCK HOME. Not even touchwiz or launcher pro. I also yanked out my SD card and rebooted. The media scanner ran for 3 seconds found no sd and then ran z4... and it SEEMS TO HAVE WORKED.

I go back to z4 after the app rebooted the phone and I got the superuser request - clicked allow and now I have the root/unroot option in z4!

Flashed ClockworkMod Recovery.

By far the easiest procedure I've read- I see he just updated the app to supposedly work for Droid 1.

Now that I've backed up to Clockwork- just get epic experience on the phone by visiting the XTA and click to download the link- then use Rom Manager to load it?

That's it?

You can't use ROM Manager to install a ROM unless you have a custom kernel already installed that supports ROM Manager. Install Epic Experience by manually booting into Clockwork and choosing the zip from there.

Oh I didn't see the creator of z4root is RyanZA - perhaps this is legit.

hmm...Ok- (kinda confusing to have a ROM Manager app and you can't use it- until you're already running roms and flashed kernels...)

Since I have rom manager installed which I used to "Flash ClockworkModRecovery 2.5.1.0" how do I "manually boot into Clockwork" Do I use Rom Manager's option to "Reboot into Recovery" or do I hold down volume, camera, power and that will reboot into clockwork?

I downloaded the latest Epic experience - and the Epic saved it to my downloads folder on the SD- once I'm "into Clockwork" will I have a file browser to drive to that zip in the downloads folder or does clockwork only look for zips in a particular area? Can you have only 1 ROM zip on your sd at a time- or are you allowed to choose from a list if you have multiples?

I swear if I get this right, I'm posting a thread called Rooting your Epic for DUMMIES and posting screen grabs using shootme. The fear of bricking my phone looming around every button press is almost not worth all this.

Thanks so much for the help!

It makes more sense when you already have a custom ROM, and want to install another custom ROM. This is when ROM Manager really becomes useful.

Bingo

ROMs are just zip files on your SD card, so you can have as many as memory permits. And yes, Clockwork has a file browser that can view any file/folder in your SD card directory.

So I click n hold vol down, power, camera while booting up and it starts up with Android Manual mode. (much like when you install an OTA update) options to wipe and reboot etc. I didn't see a way to file browse. It did suggest a update.zip file- on my sd... but I don't think that's what I downloaded from XNA for Extreme.

Rooted my Epic no sweat - it just took a sequence of run it, reboot, run it, reboot, 3rd run it gave me Re-Root or Un-Root screen. Now I don't have any idea what I'll do with this capability, compared to my Palm Pre where I happily Homebrewed away. But it's intriguing....

You are in stock recovery (blue text) - you need to be in ClockworkMod Recovery (green text). You may have to run an update.zip from stock recovery to get into Clockwork.

I thought you have to save your downloaded roms onto the root of your sd card. I know my phone has no option to browse my card for the rom.

So use my files to move epic experience to /sdcard or else your phone wont find it.

If you highlight and select a folder, you can actually view its contents. I've had to flash a few zips from my "/sdcard/dropbox" folder when I forgot to move them to the sd root directory.

Ok so I didn't go any farther as I had to travel for the weekend.

Also took awhile to find you merged this! LOL. Thanks Rag.

Your quote Rag:

Ok... so yes I only have blue text so I have to run update.zip from "stock recovery" sorry- where do I find that? I already "Flashed ClockworkMod Recovery 2.5.1.0 from within Rom Manager...

I also want to confirm I'm backed up with something useful- while I have My Backup Pro- I'm not sure what I'd recover should I have to resort to using that (thankfully never had to) I never went into the app before rooting and now that I have, I noticed it has additional root access features. What of my Data vs. Applications should I be backing up?

Rather than Epic Experience, I'm considering the latest Syndicate Fully Loaded Rom. [ROM][ACS] SyndicateROM 1.0.2 (Shuriken) :: Speed, Battery, Style :: UPDATED 11/12/10 - xda-developers

Can I use Rom Manager to enter Clockwork Recovery- then direct it to the that .zip rather than the hold button mode?

I know everyone says wipe first then flash- but I've never loaded a rom- so do I really need to factory wipe?

Sorry for all the crazy questions. I read the Epic Wiki today and that answered some questions- but still feel just as uncomfortable about this as when I started.

The features in ROM manager do not work unless you have a custom kernel installed. Use this to properly install Clockwork.

If you backup all apps + data you can always selectively restore later.

Again, ROM Manager only works if you already have a custom kernel installed. Boot into Clockwork manually.

I personally always wipe and reinstall all apps manually (except Angry Birds for high scores :p). This prevents a lot of problems with certain ROMs. You can always try not wiping and then just wipe/reinstall if you have problems.

Help with root

Well I'm going to go ahead and root my phone after reading all the threads about how good it is to do so. I have everything ready to go on my computer to do I just have to plug it in and do it. My one question is if I root how do I unroot to get 2.2 when the official version comes out? You won't get it ota if you are rooted correct? Would odin be the best way? Also I want the free hotspot so when I root howb do I go about getting that? Also when I root I'm getting clockwork so how do I backup my phone with that? Do I do it by starting the phone in recovery? Thanks for all the help. I've been researching this a lot and I've come a long way but I still need help so thanks to all.

i would root and install custom recovery and use a hacked 2.2 when it comes out instead of going ota. you would loose root for who knows how long and you will only need to wait a day or 2 before custom 2.2 roms are out after ota

Yeah I'm doing the one click. I'm glad you told me about mounting the sd card though cause I don't think the directions say that. Yeah that's true about losing root cause it will take a little bit to root again on 2.2. How do I get the wireless tether? Thanks for the response.
