Rooting for Eclair and leaked Froyo DK28

I have a question, but don't know where to post it - this seems like the best place - if not, please feel free to move it.

I have one simple question, and I can't find the answer, and I have read almost everything on rooting, roms, flashing etc.

So here it goes: if it is recommended to wipe everything and start fresh when upgrading from the stock Eclair 2.1 to any of the many Froyo 2.2 roms out there, when Sprint and Samsung finally put the update out whether it be a link to go get a zip file or OTA, will you lose everything because the official update needs your phone completely wiped?

Or will it simply update from Eclair 2.1 to Froyo 2.2 while keeping all your settings and programs. And if that is the case, why can't updating as we are doing now via rooting be seamless also? It seems like a lot of wiping clean, making image backups, and a multitude of other necessary steps to upgrade to Froyo 2.2. I must be missing something.

I mean I can understand why it would be better to start fresh, but if the official update doesn't(?) need it, why does this non official method need it and why so difficult.

I say difficult, because if it were so easy, why is there hundreds if not thousands of pages written on how to do the upgrade and not everyone will have a successful painfree upgrade?

I am confused! :-(

When the official Froyo does get released you will have to do one of the following.

1) If your on Froyo and you want to do the legitament OTA update you will have to Odin back to stock Eclair. Note: I would make a full backup with Titanium/MyBackup that way you can/or should be able to restore once "officially" updated.

2) Stay on Froyo and wait the few hours to a day that it will take for someone to have a upgrade link or downloadable official Froyo to flash.

3) Stay on Froyo and again wait the short amount of time for one of the many devs to turn the official Froyo into a custom ROM.

No matter how you look at it, once it is released if your currently on Froyo you should be able to use backups of your apps/data to restore in the official version. Also it won't take long for the "wolves" to attack that official Froyo release and get a working custom ROM from it for everyone to play with.

having a problem with the 32-bit driver file. When I try to open it with WinZip says it does not appear to be a valid archive file. Any ideas?

Paul627g,

Thanks for the quick reply, but my main question is: (I have a pure stock Epic with only two mods: (1) it is permanetly rooted via z4root but still have Eclair 2.1 and (2) I use Launcher Pro)

With the above being said, when Sprint/Samsung does release the official update and however they decide to deploy it will I lose all my settings and programs and have to re-install everything? Or will it just leave my phone, programs, and settings the way they are but I will have Froyo 2.2 instead of Eclair 2.1

Thanks!

Did you download a zip or rar file? Where are you downloading it from?

As far as I know, the official Samsung drivers are zip files, but I cannot get those drivers to work on Win7.

If you really are having issues downloading and unpacking a zip file, you may want to give your (un)zip software a good look... WinZip should be able to automatically recognize any zip/rar archive, so if yours is complaining about the archive not being a valid one, you may have other issues (such as not downloading the correct file...)...

Yes you will be fine as long as you don't change what you have now. Plus look in the general section of the Epic and look for the sticky saying Can I receive ota update to Froyo etc. Sorry I'm replying from my phone so I cant copy links.

Those links to drivers have been used time and time again and this is the first I've heard of this.

why dont you read the stickies first and then post again if you still have questions. people have taken months to come up with these stickies as they address all rooting needs thus far.

We are here to help. Tell us what your having a problem with and we will get you on the right track.

First of all, thnx for all the time and effort you guys put in to this forum. I would love to install froyo on my epic cause I'm sick and tired of waiting for samsung/sprint to get their act together.
So I read the stickies but I'm confused. I see a stickie with 3 methods on how to root. But if I do let's say the second method, does that automatically give me dk28? I want to keep it as simple as possible. No custom roms yet for me. I need a simple root and froyo. So what's my best bet? Thanks again!

@adlebo, here is what you need to do.

First if there is information such as contacts or texts, etc. you need to back up then use the second method to gain root access while still on stock Eclair 2.1. Then you can download MyBackup from the Market and do a backup of all your Data. I recommend backing up your Data to your SD card in MyBackup rather than using the free online backup. Once that is accomplished then you need to get Froyo.

Go to this thread and follow the instructions.
[How to] Factory Restore (or Fix a Bricked Phone)

Go down to where it says New Restore to Froyo DK28 and follow the instructions. When you successfully finished the install to DK28 just check your apps list to see if you have an app called SuperUser listed and you should still have root access. You can then redownload MyBackup from the Market and restore DATA only your personal data.

Any further questions please feel free to ask.

Using the "New Restore to Froyo DK28" instructions will allow me to run 2.2 without having to dip into customs roms yet?

If I do not need to backup my data do I need to root while still on 2.1 first?

I am just starting to look into all of this. Thanks!

Yes, can use it as is.

No, if your not backing up any data then go ahead and proceed with using the New Restore to Froyo DK28

I am just starting to look into all of this. Thanks!
No problem!

I have been having problems with my phone rebooting itself when idle a couple times a day. Will root plus dk28 make my rebooting problem worse, better or no effect? Also, will your above prescribed procedures allow me to install the developed Hulu app, or do I need a custom rom for that? Thanks again!

Am I rooted..Epic 4G

I'm trying to figure out if I really am rooted or not. I followed all the instructions in "the Ultimate Guide v1.5.5. However after I downloaded the Titanium backup it does not say i have Superuser rights, then it says the app will not work. What i'm confused about is when i check my firmware it says 2.2.1 kernel 2.6.32.9 and build FROYO. DK28.

Any ideas where i went wrong?
