OK well im fed up with this waiting for the ics upgrade so I've convinced myself to root. I need a SOLID built tutorial which is idiot proof as I am not root savy. I am a little afraid of messing my phone up. What do I have to look forward to with my gs2 rooted w ics?

If you go to XDA forums for the i777, you'll find great in-depth tutorials for both rooting and flashing a custom ROM. If I remember correctly, they even had a nice YouTube video.

Thank you! I was looking all night for that. The only one I found would increase the count and im not about to void my warranty and insurance

Just to be clear, rooting always voids the warranty. If you don't increment the flash counter it's easier to hide that you rooted before returning your phone for warranty service.

If you are looking for a good ICS rom once you are rooted I like LiLChris's PhoneBricker and have been using it for some time with Entropy's ICS kernel without any problem. The default kernel he includes is Siyah which a lot of people like but for whatever reason I kept getting force closes with it.

Regardless of which rom you use for ICS I highly recommend Apex for your launcher, though Nova and Trebuchet are both very similar.

You can do it in steps - read the XDA link I posted above, read it again until you are comfortable. Then just do it. Once your phone is rooted and you have a kernel with CWM recovery on it, just sit back and read the development threads. Think about whether you want a Touchwiz-based ICS rom, or a pure ICS experience. Then when you are ready, do a nandroid backup with CWM and flash your ROM of choice. If you don't like it you can restore the nandroid backup.

I rooted my phone a couple of months ago, but I haven't flashed ICS on it yet. I'm watching the XDA devel threads for ICS, just waiting for things to settle down a bit and then I'll flash one. I'm in no hurry...
