the pc36img.zip file should never be opened either. You have to place it as the zip file on the sdcard, power on the phone by pressing volume down and power at the same time, select bootloader, let it scan the file, it'll ask to update, hit yes.

Worst case is that you call sprint and tell them your phone wont go past the white evo screen (which it is) and they send you a new one. Not that bad.

The pcimg file does NOT need to be unzipped. This is a case of you (OP) not reading instructions. The file needs to be placed on the sd card, not unzipped.

It stays on the white screen but then goes to black screen with a small phone and a red triangle and exclamation point

This is good news. That's recovery. :)

I know you're having a hell of a time here but don't worry, you can come out of this for sure.

Now the auto root zip you got from the XDA thread, I want you to copy the PC36IMG.zip RUU file that you have and put it in the folder the zip from XDA was extracted to.

Now with your phone on the red triangle screen, open a command prompt in to the folder and type this:

adb push PC36IMG.zip /sdcard

This will take some time to copy over but that's OK, when it's done type:

adb reboot bootloader

When the phone comes back up in the white menu, it'll either scan the sdcard and ask if you want to apply the update, hit volume up for yes, if it's just a menu, select "bootloader" with the power button.

When the update is done, select Yes to reboot, your phone will now be stock 3.7

Do you have another adapter for the sd? I have had a few that stuck. Altho, as TFE posted, you are in recovery of sorts so should be able to progress from there. Smart money would be on you getting back to stock, pick 1 root method, read it on XDA, not anywhere else, and see what issues arose for people. I know a certain person with an evo and our phones are polar opposites when it comes to how they react

my phone is off and my mini sd is in an adapter in my laptop but it wont let me add the rom to the sd card because they said its write protected

Put the card back in the phone, get back to recovery and follow the post I just put up.

im a little confused on your instructions and now its just staying on the white htc evo 4g white screen and not gonig to the black one like it was earlier

Is the rom downloaded to your pc or did it get onto your sd? If so, boot to recovery manually (volume down + power button with the device off) and select flash zip from sd, and follow it through
