The guys at AndroidSpin have received word from what they believe to be a reliable source within the Verizon camp that Android 2.2 could possibly hit the Droid 1, Droid X and Incredible all next week starting on August 6th.
--------------------
It looks like Android 2.2 (Froyo) will be making its way to your devices very soon. Thanks to a Verizon tipster who claims that the Motorola Droid
X, the HTC Droid Incredible, and the Motorola Droid will be receiving the Android 2.2 update at the same time. He also stated that this not a rumor, but confirmed. He said that HTC and Motorola will be release Android 2.2 simultaneously and will start pushing out the Android 2.2 update beginning August 6th, which is next Friday. It?s expected to hit all of these devices by August 15th. That?s great news and potentially ads substance to the rumor that the Motorola Droid 2 will ship with Android 2.2.

Keep your fingers crossed and an eye on your device.

Why the hell not? It should be out already since the Nexus one got in a month ago...

On the plus side...most companies try to update existing phones before releasing a new product with the coolest new OS, and the Droid 2 seems to be launching the week after (even if just a soft launch). Also, the OG Droid may have had the update ready for a while now, since supposedly was originally scheduled to have it in July a week or two ago (also a rumor). Finally, the Incredible seems to have quite strong confirmation that it will get the update about that time. So at least three other rumors would seem to coincide with this, along with normal business practice.

That said, there are some strikes against it too. Obviously it's a totally unsourced rumor (even by rumor standards...there's no reference to other, previously correct tips coming from this source). And Verizon doesn't often push out updates to multiple phones at once (although...not a lot of Dincs have shipped yet I suppose, and while the X has sold well it's still early enough in the cycle to not have sold nearly as many sa the OG Droid).

So we'll see. I'd sure love it if this were to turn out to be true!

Yeah, I'm not really advocating people buy into it, I was just trying to lay out the "evidence" (so to speak) on both sides.

Probably right now DX users are pretty vulnerable to someone yanking our OTA crank, since the last rumor about the minor OTA patch panned out (although from a different source I should note). Still, it isn't utterly implausible...but I'm not going to believe it without individual confirmation...or an upgrade alert on my phone.

Let the rumors and speculation begin!!!

I'd love to think this is true but I am not going to get my hopes up.

I've heard august several times. so It didn't seem far fetched to me.
and a few sites have picked up the "rumor" so.. i guess all we can do is hope at this point.

Sounds promising, and I'd certainly welcome it. However, I'm not going to bet the farm on the veracity of this rumor.

A homeless guy told me he was actually thinking august 8th. I consider him a credible source and tipped him $1 for his thoughts, which he claimed he was going to use for diapers, which i also believed.

LMFAO I cracked up reading this post.

The homeless guy was only a few days off if you see him again..... give him another dollar , :)

Aug 4th is "frozen yogurt" day I know because I got connections :p

3 device that have a million users each. U might as well shut Vzw down for a day there's no the towers or servers will be able to handle that much data. And then all the calls to tech my droid is messed up.

Guys I have a few questions that I'm hoping you could guide me on.

I'm an IT Professional albeit more on the infrastructure, engineering and Microsoft platforms rather then linux or mobile devices side of the house. With the exception of the DroidX that I purchased on release day (which I'm loving so far btw), I've never been one to jump to the latest devices, O/S, processors, laptops, etc.. I would perfer to stay stable and running and let other people & companies find the problems, bugs, performance issues and limitations BEFORE I upgrade.

In addition, the only way I would upgrade would be if the upgrade directly impacted an existing issue that I was having, ie.. security issue, performance, battery life, etc.. That being said, I wanted to ask a few questions that I'm sure someone could answer...

1..... The Froyo 2.2 upgrade. Is this a "forced or automatic" upgrade or "optional".. by that I mean can I choose to delay the upgrade if I wanted to...?

2..... Prior to performing an upgrade, I like to perform a FULL Backup of the device as a backout plan in the event the upgrade has a problem. Is this also recommended in the Droid environment..?

3..... Assuming that backing up your device is a recommended action. What Backup & Restore Application do you recommend and have tested that will backup not only the O/s, but also backup the 3rd party applications and system settings (i.e. fonts, email configs, colors, etc..)

4..... Lastly, can someone outline in detail from a techie level or post a link as to what Froyo 2.2 upgrade will provide that 2.1 does not have...? I see the Flash update and one or two others features...

Sorry about the long winded post... and my inexperience in this area. Trust me, I love performance and hacking (sorry, performance enhancements) like the rest of us, I just want to be sure that I clearly understand the process and have a backout plan if something should happen.

Thank you all for your time... Rick

Spoke With TS Sup

I was talking to a TS supervisor this morning about an issue with my current Omnia phone (ordered a DX on 7/23, waiting for it to ship). When I brought up the DX will be getting 2.2 on 8/6 he said "Ya, I know". I asked him of that it was official and he said yes. He went on to say that they would be getting it first because of the commitment they made to Google. Not sure if he was blowing smoke, I was pretty upset when I was talking to him, he could have just been trying to placate me.

The question is this. We all know how reliable Moto and everyone else is about updates on the Droid (*cough* 2.1). If this fiasco happens again with the Droid and the update is released until say September or November, Will this affect the DroidX 2.2 launch date?

Coming from the BB camp im skeptical of all update rumors.lol

Agreed. The only time my Blackberrys ever ran an official OS was when I got them out of the box. If a leak or a Driphter hybrid was stable, I would always run that.
