Rumors going around that HTC signed a contract to produce 3 years of Nexus phones

Three years is a bit of a problem. I'm not opposed to an HTC Nexus - but exclusivity would be pretty bad for everyone.

I know what you're saying, but in this case I am OK with it. Could just be the fact that I prefer in most cases HTC over other manufacturers. But if it helps them get back on their feet financially I'm all for it. I don't want it to get to the point that I have to choose between Samsung, IPhone or something from China. I want choices (even if I prefer HTC).

My main concern is about the camera. Nexus devices got a great camera from Huawei, and HTC isn't known for having stellar cameras.

Three years doesn't really make sense for either company unless Google is patent shopping once again and cooking up some sort of sweetheart deal for HTC in order to inject capital into their phone biz while avoiding an outright buyout and another multi-billion dollar loss down the line.

This makes me sad. HTC has already been going down hill (or at least I think so) -- and Huawei did an awesome job with the 6P so I was hoping it would stay in Huawei's hands.

Have faith, I think HTC could make a great nexus. They made the OG nexus and everyone loved it. They have had some misses in the past few years but I still think they are a capable company. *fingers crossed*

I understand for the most part that the 6P is fine phone as far as hardware goes but the software is all Google/Android. I have read about several QC issues. One is the pink screen and some have had their 6P replaced 4 times. Another is the screen coming loose and the back plate around the camera coming off or cracking. Phone is very easily bent and the sim tray is not aligned properly on some and getting stuck and can't be removed. I am sure this is very isolated though.

Yeah I would say it is isolated since I haven't heard of any of these issues except the bending and pink screen. Pink screens is just a defect that can be replaced .. There is someone with an S7 Edge that made a post with a pink screen. It happens sometimes.. as crappy as it is.

As for the bending ... I personally say it was blown out of proportion. After the iPhone fiasco everyone instantly ran and tried to bend phones. I even looked at some of these "bend tests" and people were putting enormous pressure in specific spots and then shouting "OH WOW it bent!" -- To me that isn't realistic at all since #1 you would never apply that pressure in day to day life and #2 most phones will bend and/or break just like that if you apply enough pressure in a specific spot.

There are misprints in many mass produced products - however I believe it has been proven in the tech community that the "bend-gate" nonsense is exactly that - nonsense. Build quality on the 6P has been resoundingly fantastic - which is startling because many people expected it to suck quite a bit, thinking that Huawei would cheap out on production.

The complaints? Well, one of our most important roles here is to help.... people from all over the world congregate here, asking questions, voicing concerns, needing assistance for issues that are above their own skill level. So we have a disproportionate amount of reports of issues because a disproportionate amount of people with issues end up here. That applies for EVERY phone.

I've had my 6P for... good three months now. I can honestly say without hesitation that, overall, it's the best phone I've every personally had my hands on and used and I've had none of the issues that I've seen reported here. In fact, I really haven't had any real issues with any of the phones I've purchased over the years... and since I am not that lucky a person, that just illustrates that anecdotal evidence of an issue is just that, anecdotal. And I have ZERO doubts about the hardware chops over at Huawei... they know how to make a phone.... their software, which thankfully is nowhere to be seen on the 6P, has a lot to be desired, but they concede nothing any of the other OEMs when it comes to building a nice phone.

Will it bend? Sure.... I could pick it up now and snap it in half.. but I could do that with any of the other larger screened phones. Maybe it's not as resistant to bending as some others, but it'd still come at a level of stress far higher than I would reasonably expect a phone to be subject to without snapping in half.

Back to HTC.... they are similar to Huawei in the sense that I have no hesitation about their ability to build an excellent phone. All those HTC Ones were build beautifully well. It's the choices that HTC made that caused their problems... choices that Google would be making in this case.

Without seeing the contract, we don't know if they are committing to 3 years worth of Nexus phones, or simply of being candidates for the Nexus program within the next 3 years. As much as I want to see HTC gain traction, I feel this rumor is being twisted into something it's not.

My concern would be HTC's financial condition but obviously Google has looked into that a determined it's not a problem. And wiith HTC sales.down they have plenty of production capacity to take on the Nexus line.

I have no problem with HTC hardware I've had HTC phones in the past and they were solid, reliable units. The One phones showed they know to make beautiful high-end hardware. So bring on an HTC Nexus.

I do hope Google continues makijng 2-3 models at various price points.

At least they didn't make a deal with friggin' Samsung!

Would be very nice to see. IMO HTC are at the top of Android when it comes to design and build quality. Pair that with stock Android with updates directly from Google....could be a pretty spectacular device.

Don't know how much weight I'd put into this rumour though. Three years of Nexus devices sounds like a bit of a stretch, simply because no OEM has had more than two years in a row. Samsung did the Nexus S then Galaxy Nexus. LG did the Nexus 4 then Nexus 5, skipped a year then did the Nexus 5X.

Guess we'll see. Hopefully HTC are still around and kicking for this to happen for all 3 years.

A deal with samsung would most likely be the best nexus ever... Samsung knows how to produce the greatest phones ever, and software is all google. Samsung today would definitely not cheap out like they did on the galaxy nexus

For internal hardware Samsung is doing a good job, but their hardware design is still pretty far behind. The glass, buttons on the wrong sides, reverse nav row physical buttons, lack of front facing speakers, etc. all need to be fixed if they're going to become hardware design leaders. Specs are great in their devices and taking their hands off a lot of the software components would definitely help them.

I have not had any of those issues.. Myn is flawless. You do know every single phone that is released has problems with some devices.. Just the way it is when you make millions of them
