S-Pen will not work

Hello, I have been given a Galaxy Note 1 and the stylus does not work.

I have turned on the "Hovering Pen Icon" and it will show when I get the stylus close to the screen, but I cannot do anything else with the stylus. Thanks for any help

Sounds like the pen is bad. If the phone still recognized it, and if your phone is stock, that would be your issue.
