Hi all,

I'm an Aussie - no decent forums here in Oz so have joined this one.

Looking at upgrading my s7 to a s20+. We have 4G or 5G options here, but unfortunately we're stuck with the inferior Exynos SoC. I live rural so 5G isn't going to be realistically available for a good 3-5 years and I tend to upgrade my phone every 3 years once the battery starts becoming noticeably less efficient. However the 5G model does come with 12GB RAM rather than 8GB.

I don't do much gaming apart from Pokemon Go, so phone is mostly used for YouTube, web surfing, emails, phone calls, etc. Am i bettee off saving the $150 and going 4G only? $150 gets me a good phone case, better screen protector, etc. I'm guessing I'm not going to notice much difference running Pokemon Go with 8GB RAM and not 12?

Most people enjoying their s20+?

Cheers!

Hi , welcome to AC!
I think you would be fine with 4G and 8gb ram until your next phone which be 3 years like you mentioned .

Thanks, my thinking is that by the time 5G is available here, the phone technology will be a good 3 or 4 generations deep into 5G and will probably be better optimised for 5G by that stage

I thought all S20 models came with 12gb of ram...
Except for the Ultra 512Gb which have 16gb ram

Not here in Australia. Only 5G versions of s20 and s20+ get 12GB RAM, the 4G only models get 8GB. In US there's no option for 4G only, at least not with s20+ which is only sold with 5G and hence the 12GB

Agreed, and not just on the spectrum side of things. The Average user wouldn't even come close to using 12 GB of RAM, so that's a waste of money right now. I'm an above average user with 8 GB of memory on my phone, and I only fill about half that. What makes this more notable is Android is designed to keep memory full to run more efficiently. So even with all the games I play and other use, I'm not able to give it 8GB worth of apps to keep in memory.

If you were into something that was a memory hog, then the 12 GB may be worth it. I know photo and video editing on a PC can use a ton of RAM, but I doubt even the Android counterparts of those apps would make use of all that any time soon.

IMO you shouldn't worry about the RAM at those sizes of 8GB and above. At that point its just bragging.

By your usage description you would probably be just fine with even 4gb Ram, don't forget that 8gb is already huge and 12gb is sales talk and overkill in 95% of cases
