S20+ music controls with my Fossil Gen 5

I am an elementary school PE teacher. I recently updated to an S20+ and I'm having a weird issue with my music controls on my Gen 5 smartwatch. If I pause my playlist on YouTube music for more than a minute or so to teach, the music controls on the watch stop working until I unlock the phone. For example I hit play on the watch controls and nothing happens, as soon as I unlock the phone the music starts playing, I don't have to hit play on my YouTube Music app it just starts playing. Is anyone having a similar issue or know how I may be able to fix? I didn't have this issue with my S10 plus and the phone and watch keep a solid connection.

Does that happen on other media apps, like Netflix?

Try turning off Battery Optimization for YouTube Music in the system settings.
