S20 Ultra = Pretty Fragile Glass

I didn't realize the 20/20+ have Gorilla Glass 5 on the back and the Ultra is using Gorilla Glass 6.
Every other source I can find says Gorilla Glass 6 front and back so I think she means the entire series are the first and only phones that have gg6 like this.

Why what's the difference. It's glass. Honestly it's just BS marketing.

Talk to me when they make glass that doesn't scratch let alone break. I would love not to deal with screen protectors.

This wouldn't happen if they still made phones from durable metal or plastic.

I don't see the point of these videos. If one is to drop what is essentially a glass sandwich on cement, what does one expect the result to be? That is why they make protective cases and wraps. The degree of protection that is chosen is left up to the end user. Cases are not designed to make a phone more aesthetically pleasing, they are designed to protect your investment. A case is certainly not a guarantee, but it certainly can increase the chances of a somewhat fragile device living to see another day. Even the best of us can lose our grip from time to time.

I know people that everytime I see them their screens are shattered or cracked. I've been lucky I guess, I've been using smartphones since the S2 and never so much as put a nick or scratch on them. I peeled the screen protector off my S10 the first day I owned it and it still looks mint. My S7 that I used up until the release day if the S10 still looks mint. I might even rock the Ultra without a case to make it more pocketable. (If I dont return it that is)

She keeps dropping it with two hands. She can't let go of both hands at the exact same time, so the phone keeps landing on one of it's edges. Not surprising the camera had no damage. I think she should have dropped it with just one hand to have a better chance of it landing flat.

That's why case makers are in business... Clumsy people...
I only use minimalistic cases or skins or even nothing and I have yet to break a screen in over 20 years, buyers even compliment how *as new* my phones look when I sell them on.

Thats not a point to not buy a phone. Every phone made of glass can break if thrown.

These drop tests are not a perfect way to assume that the phone is very fragile.

To be fair, that wouldn't make difference anyway. The phone is going to tumble no matter how it's dropped.

The glass in our phones is designed to offer a balance between scratch and impact resistance. Generally, one resistance going up comes at the cost of the other going down. Anyone who believes that a phone clad mostly in glass should be able to suffer drops onto concrete with no intervening protection by a case/bumper should take note that glass, regardless of strengthening treatments, is still glass..

Ouch! Wonder if the weight of the Ultra is a factor?

Absolutely - can't avoid laws of physics.

At 220g, the Ultra suffers a 35% more forceful impact on drop than the regular S20 at 163g (though the pressure at point of impact might not be 35% greater, if the phones were to land flush on an edge or face).

Yea, exactly! Here's my S7 that I used for three years straight without a screen protector:

Here's my ancient S3 as it sits today back when I did use screen protectors:

Keep in mind that I work outdoor construction, take them with me while I'm riding dirt bikes, keep it in a compartment on my Jet Ski (I wrap it with thick microfibers when I put it in my Jet Ski) and they still all look mint. A friend of mine around the S5 era talked me out of buying a screen protectors anymore telling me that I have that nice screen why distort it with a film on it, etc.

Now on the other hand, I know three people at work who go through a couple new phones a year and every time that I see them their screens are completely shattered! Heck I wish I could find my old Boost flip phone...that still looked mint too the last time I seen it.

Now I've always used the thinnest silicon cases for my phones because I can't stand the look and feel of something big and bulky that looks and feels like a 6x9 patio paver block, lol, but I used them mainly for grip since these glass phones are very slippery. I "might" take a chance with the Ultra due to its size and not use a case at all because it's thickness without a case is the same as my S10 is with the Best Buy branded silicon case. The thicker phone 'should' be easier to grip without a case than the smaller thinner phones.

I also will only use extremely thin cases, mostly for the grip factor. I've been using the Spigen ultra-thin on my S10 and I can hardly notice any size difference with or without the case on it.
