S24 Audio to Earbuds Turns Off When Phone Locks

Hi,

I upgraded to a Samsung S24 and have been using PowerAmp for years and never had problems before. Now when I'm streaming to my Buds2, Poweramp shuts down when the screen locks. I can restart it using the bud controls, but this is irritating.

I've tried updating permissions but there doesn't appear to be a way to set them for PowerAmp.

I set battery usage to unlimited for PowerAmp. No change.

I created a routine to keep PowerAmp running when the buds are used to stream music. No change.

Anyone seen this, or any ideas how to solve it?

All suggestions are welcome and greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Dave

Do the buds do that with another media player? Does PowerAmp behave correctly if you play music through the speakers and you lock the screen? How about a different set of headphones or BT audio connection?

Hi SpookDroid.

Thanks for the comments and the great questions. I've tested a lot of combinations. Using either the Samsung Buds2 or the S24 speaker, I've tried PowerAmp, Chrome, DuckDuckGo, and VoiceRecorder. All of them turn off when the phone locks by timeout or if the phone locks by button (with or without the app open in the home screen).

I don't have other headphones or audio connections to try, but base on those results it appears (to my untrained brain) that the particular audio device is not the issue.

Thanks again.

Are you using separate app sound?

For Poweramp, check if this is enabled.

Can't find either Misc or Wakelock on my phone.

All: It never ceases to amaze me how helpful people can be on the internet, in an age of trolls who can always find fault with the most inane thing. (Maybe even including that last sentence. :) )

Thanks to all for your time and kindness.
You're welcome. I'm sorry I don't have any other suggestions.

Since you've tried several apps and they all stop audio upon screen-off, I don't think it's an app issue. Definitely not a generalized phone issue wither (I have an S24 with no issue and there'd be hoards of people screaming if this was a widespread one). So let's try to pin-point this one before trying out the ever-feared factory reset.

Are there any routines running that may be stopping audio when the phone goes to sleep? Any power-saving modes active or apps that have a similar feature? If you boot up the phone in Safe Mode, does audio on screen off work?

FEAR THE RESET!

Yeah, not gonna do that. I'd rather live with the annoyance.

Well, it's android and it is a phone. Google and Samsung add tons of bloatware. I can't tell what might be running in the background that I should kill, but really, I have only a few apps that I've added and I'm not using those now. I've gone through all the settings and don't see anything that might even be close to being a conflict.

I tried booting in safe mode. Turned on bluetooth. My PowerAmp app was not available so I used Chrome to stream. Same symptoms.

BTW, not only did it disable everything in safe mode, it changed many of my personal settings including auto time update, theme, probably more. Now that I have to go back and re-login to Samsung to find my theme then figure out what else it munged up, I will have spent about 10,000 times more time on this that what it would cost me to just deal with the S24 turning off my music every time I pick up my phone. I have to say, it's just not worth the effort.

Thanks again for your time.

Regards,

Dave

Welcome to today's episode of Stump The Forum! Today, we're going to try some even more esoteric Android changes that won't solve the problem.

And in case you're wondering what today's prize is, the winner (if there is one before we reach the end of this season) is the claim to be the first to solve this problem.

Added PowerAmp to Never Auto Sleep apps.

Adaptive Power Saving is not enabled.

Performance Profile is Standard.

And the answer is....

No change.

I find it odd that all apps (that I've tried) that stream audio have the same symptom, AND others don't see this. I've not done many setting changes since I got the phone. I do have a different theme, but SpookDroid suggested Safe Mode and that set the theme to default where the issue persisted.

Again, thanks to all.

Can you try removing the 'lock' portion of the lock screen or setting up Smart Lock at your location to keep the phone from locking? Wondering if it's the 'screen off' state or the 'locked' state is what's triggering the audio to stop...

Also check a couple things (I know you may have already done this, but just to double-check, can't hurt!) :
1) Data saver is off or PowerAmp is added to the exception list.
2) In PowerAmp's app info, go to the Battery section and ensure 'Unrestricted' is selected.
