S25 Google Messages settings

So I know I'm late to the game, but I finally switched my S21 for an S25. I've been using Textra for years and I just love it.

BUT

It seems as if I'm being forced to change to Google Message. I missed a meeting because I didn't get a group text through Textra, but they're working ok through GM. Messaging seems to be working fine now, after a week with the new phone.

Is there a way to change the appearance of GM? It's so freaking ugly and plain. I have change the colors (from the boring and limited list they offer), but what I'm more interested in is shrinking the whole thing. The font is too big. I can't find a way to change the font (I have it changed in my universal settings, but that doesn't seem to affect GM). There's too much "white space." I like my texts crammed together so I can see a lot of a convo at once, plus people can't read it if they're more than a foot away. The "pinch to zoom" option in the GM settings only makes it bigger-just the opposite of what I want.

Any way to customize this? I'm still bitter over losing Textra, but I can't not get texts. n TIA

Hi, you can use Samsung theme or try Samsung messages, download from the galaxy store.

Try pinch to zoom to make text smaller. There's also a resize option for GM

Pinch to zoom only makes it bigger! I want it to be very small, and text bubbles closer together. I have font set to small in the Android general setting and it's small everywhere except Message.
