I downloaded a timer app and when I set the timer on.... and when I press the top left button to do other stuff, it auto turns off my timer. Am I not allowed to do other stuff while the timer ap is on? It can't run in the background or something?

I moved this from General Help to the Gear S3 forum for more specific traffic.

This should not happen, and the stopwatch and timer should work in the background if another application is on. Maybe you should uninstall that application and install another one?

Does pressing the top button, push programs into the background? What's the function of the top button?

About using other programs... not many multi timer apps out there....

I think you meant top right button...there are no buttons on the left. Yes the timer runs in the background. I'm running the official Samsung timer. Are you using a 3rd party timer?

Using the Samsung stop watch app. I started it running, selected the back button, selected the home button, swiped right to the calendar widget, selected to open the calendar x viewed the next events, selected the home button, selected the home button again to open the app screen, selected the stopwatch app, the stopwatch app opened and the tone had kept advancing.

I use the Samsung timer nearly every day. It is set as my double tap home app. I can navigate away from the timer app and do all sorts of things and the timer will continue to run in the background and sound the alarm upon completion.
