S3 mini, Battery from 100% to 1-2% in 5 min

Hi everyone,

I've had my S3 mini for over half a year now, and mostly its worked fine. Recently however, I noticed some connectivity issues with chargers. When I connect a charger to my phone, the phone will often "buzz" to indicate being connected/disconnected to the charger, especially if i dont keep it still on a flat surface, even though the charger is connected. I cleaned out the charging port completely and tried several different chargers, but this hasn't helped. Probably related to this, the battery life is absolutely unbearable. Just this morning I took my phone after charging it to 100%, and 3-5 minutes of browsing the internet on it, the phone shuts down/restarts by itself. When it turns on, the battery indicator was at 1%. This happens constantly, and I get about 5-30 minutes of use from 100% battery life until this happens again, and I have to charge it again.. Even keeping it hooked to a charger doesn't always prevent the phone from shutting down and being out of battery.

The battery indicator itself shows whatever it likes it seems, sometimes 5% then a minute later 73%, then shutdown and 1%.

The phone isn't rooted or anything, there's plenty of room left on the SD card and the phone memory, and the os is up-to-date.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I'm getting rather frustrated. I'll either reset to factory settings or buy a new battery when I have the money, not sure that'll fix it though.

Same here see other thread I have just replied to, installed Deep Sleep Battery Saver yesterday - problem resolved

Hey dodger148,

Thanks for the reply, although from the app description I must say I don't think it will address my problem. The app is designed for longer battery life by minimizing battery usage during "standby" mode, but my problem is more to do with the battery life being pretty random and the constant reboots/shutdowns I get when im using my phone. So from my understanding, that app wouldn't help much with my current situation, but thanks anyway.

You shouldn't need to replace the battery after only 6 months.
Have you tried a Factory Reset?

Hi GSDer, thanks for replying. I think I'll have to try that next, since nothing else has worked so far. I ran the phone at 100% battery and in "safe mode" with no apps, but the problem persisted. Maybe the factory reset will work anyway, I'll report back so if anyone else runs into this problem they'll know :)

I have the very same problem, started this week, it also happends when browsing, youtube, candy crush, I already made a factory reset if one of the downloaded apps was draining the battery, but continues doing it, when the charger is plugged I can browse etc.. and shows charging, also installed easy battery saver and the problem persists, my phone is 10 months old.

It honestly sounds more like a phone problem than a battery problem, but if you know someone that you can swap batteries with that would prove it one way or the other.

Alright, I did the reset to factory settings but that didn't help at all either.

Emalvido, I think you're right, your problem sounds exactly like mine; can't use the phone much unless its plugged in and charging.

Matt, I believe my phone was manufactured right around that time too, january of this year or december of last year. I read on another forum something about the charging port (or some internal part of it) in the older s3 and s3 mini being somehow very fragile and just overall low quality, and over time it might get party disconnected so the phone won't get charged properly. The person who had this problem sent his phone in for repairs and just got a new one I think. IIRC he said the newer versions have a better charging port, so looks like Samsung is aware of the issue.

GSDer, unfortunately I have no one to swap batteries with, but I'm thinking of eighter buying a new battery and/or trying to contact the place who sold the phone, see if they take it in for repairs or have any more info, since contacting Samsung was a complete waste of time.

Quick update, I've sent the phone in for repairs. I was told by the retailer that samsung phones have a 2 year warranty by default (at least in my country). Hopefully they get it fixed and provide the reason for the fault. Should get it back in about a week.

Good luck! Keep us posted.

Finally got a call from the repair place, they said the problem was with the battery. Still haven't got the phone back, problems with the warranty. Problem should get fixed with just getting a new battery though. Good idea to try a different battery and buy a new one, since they only have a 6 month warranty even if the phone has 2 years, since it'll end up costing a lot more to send it in for repairs.

There we go, got the phone back now. All they did was replace the battery, but the battery only had a 6 month warranty even though the phone had 2 years. So for anyone with this problem, I'd recommend to test a different battery and/or just buy a new one yourself, if it's been over 6 months. Otherwise you'll end up spending 2-3 times the cost of the new battery.

having the same problem for 3 days now i did everything i came upon the net i update my firmware with 5 diffrent versions i even updated with custom rom like kitkat still the same ... i wanted to confirm the issue otherwise i will be wasting my money on a new battery ....

I too had this issue around November last year.my phone was also from March 2013. Buying a new battery does fix it but I recommend you get an original battery from the Galaxy Ace II as it is a 1700mah battery while the s3 mini's is 1500mah ;)
