When I get an incoming call, screen stays on until I place to ear or wave hand over proximity sensor then it goes black as expected. When I remove from ear so phone front is clear from anything, the screen stays black. I can hit the home button and the screen comes on. In Call Settings I have the option "Turn off screen during calls" selected. I have two other S4's both work properly, screen black when placed near ear or hand over screen, turns back on when removed from such. Any ideas why one stays black yet proximity test *#0*# works as expected?

I just ran CPU-Z which shows the proximity sensor. When first run, the proximity sensor status shows blank. When I put my hand over phone the status changes to 0cm. When I remove my hand it stays saying 0cm.

My s4 on sprint and my mother's s4 on vzw do the same thing! A total pain.

Solution for screen goes black during call but won't come back on after moving phone away from your ear (proximity sensor err).

You most likely have dust in the earpiece and it's interfering with the proximity sensor.

Solution: Get a can of air and spray it in the earpiece or do the cheap / easy method. Swallow all saliva in your mouth and then blow hard into the earpiece.

This worked for me after a month of frustration with this problem.

good luck!

Never had this problem but my brothers s4 does, he just blows in the ear piece, like Charles said, and the problem goes away for a month or so. Seems like some s4s aren't as sealed as others
